Clairemont High Dedicates New Automotive Facility
WHAT: San Diego Unified School District is dedicating its new Auto Technology Facility at Clairemont High School. The $2.6 million College, Career & Technical Education facility (CCTE) is funded by Proposition S and a California Proposition 1D matching-fund grant. The new facility includes a new 3,475-square-foot masonry building with six auto bays that are used by students as labs; and a 32-student-classroom that is housed in a remodeled 3,420-square-foot auto shop area. The buildings provide an industry-standard facility that supports certification by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF). These professional facilities will help prepare students for work in the commercial automotive industry, enabling instruction and practice in such areas as engine performance, steering and suspension, electrical and mechanical components and brakes.

BACKGROUND: The Clairemont High Automotive Technology Program provides career and technical education in the vehicle maintenance, service and repair pathway within the transportation industry sector. In addition to the coursework requirements in English, math, science and humanities for entry into a University of California or California State University, Clairemont High provides the following sequence of courses in the career pathway: transportation technology 1 and 2 (grades 9 and 10), NATEF brakes and suspension (grade 11); and NATEF automotive technology (grade 12).
The Automotive Technology Facility is one of four major projects at Clairemont High School that were funded by San Diego Unified School District's Prop. S bond program. The school's stadium complex was also completely renovated, as was its baseball and softball fields. These projects represent an investment of more than $10 million of Prop. S funds into Clairemont High School and the Clairemont community.
The project partners for the new automotive facility were Zagrodnik + Thomas Architects and Sraightline Construction. Construction began in April 2010 and was completed in November 2011.
