JANUARY
14 -- Year-round schools reopen.
17 -- Dedication of Shared-Use Field, Gompers Charter School and
Millennial Tech Middle School, 1:30 p.m., Millennial Tech Middle School,
1110 Carolina Ln. (92102). The renovated field will be used by both

17 -- Kearny Cluster Meeting, 4:30 p.m., Kearny High School Room 301, 7651
Wellington Way, (92111). Parents, students and community members are
invited to attend this meeting, which discusses educational issues at the
high school and its middle and elementary schools. Schools in the Kearny
cluster are: Angier, Carson, Chesterton, Cubberley, Fletcher, Jones,
Juarez, Linda Vista, Ross, and Wegeforth elementariness, Montgomery and

17 -- Bay Park Elementary campus tours, 8:45-10 a.m., Bay Park
Elementary, 2433 Denver St. (92110). Bay Park Elementary is offering
campus tours for neighborhood Kindergarten students and those interested
in applying through the Choice program. Contact: (619) 276-1471. Open to
area residents/interested families.
21 -- Martin Luther King Holiday. All schools and offices closed.
* 23 -- Dr. Carolyn Callahan: "What's Out There for the Advanced Student
and Why Do they Need It?," the GATE Distinguished Lecture Series, 7 p.m.,
Auditorium, Eugene Brucker Education Center, 4100 Normal St. (92103). Dr.
Callahan has a PhD in educational psychology with an emphasis in gifted
education. The GATE Distinguished Lecture Series brings nationally
recognized speakers to San Diego to talk about gifted and talented

25 -- Holmes Elementary School family tours, 9 a.m., Holmes Elementary
School, 4902 Mt. Ararat Dr. (92111). Find out about your neighborhood
school by taking a tour with Principal Jonathan Saipe. If your child is
entering kindergarten next year or you're considering a move to
Clairemont, here's your chance to learn about this school. Contact:

* 26 -- Kearny Cluster Pre-K to13 School Fair, Kearny High, 11 a.m.-2
p.m., 7651 Wellington Street (92111). The 16 schools in the Kearny cluster
will highlight their core instructional programs. Several early childhood
programs (Pre-K) are offered at the elementary schools, and many students
at the Kearny High Educational Complex begin attending classes at Mesa
College in 11th grade, some completing one year or more of college by high
school graduation (the ³13² in Pre-K to 13). Contact: Rosemary Cruz at

* 26 -- Pacific Beach Cluster School Fair, noon to 3 p.m., Mission Bay
High School, 2475 Grand Ave. (92109). The six Pacific Beach schools --
Sessions Elementary, Pacific Beach Elementary, Crown Point Junior Music
Academy, Barnard Mandarin Chinese School, Pacific Beach Middle and Mission
Bay High -- will have informational booths, activities for the kids and

28 -- Area 5 High School Cluster Meeting, 4 p.m., University City High
media center, 6949 Genesee Ave. (92122). Parents, students and community
members are invited to attend this meeting, which discusses educational
issues at the high schools. High schools in area 5 are: Mission Bay,
University City, and Hoover. Contact: Mitzi Merino, Area 5 Superintendent,

Award-winning author Kathleen Krull, whose acclaimed biographies for young
readers include "The Boy on Fairfield Street: How Ted Geisel Grew Up to
Become Dr. Seuss," the "Lives of" series, the "Giants of Science" series,
and the brand-new "The Beatles: They Were Fab‹and They Were Funny," will

FEBRUARY
