Your coverage is invited of any of the following upcoming events on the campuses of the San Diego Unified School District. For more items, check out the calendar on the front of the district website at www.sandi.net.

 

Please note that if items are listed as "not open to the public," that means accredited members of the media are invited, but the general public is not. These are generally items during the school day.

OCTOBER

 

12 -- Supplemental Education Services Meet the Provider Fair, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Lincoln High School, 4777 Imperial Ave. (92113). The "Meet the Providers Fairs" are an excellent opportunity for parents and students to meet the different tutoring organizations listed below that are contracted to provide SES Free Tutoring to eligible students.  Participating organizations will be there to answer your questions and provide you with information regarding their individual programs.  If you plan to attend one or both of these fairs, please remember to bring your child's application that you received in your mail.  SES Staff will be available to assist you and accept your applications in person. *14 -- Madison Community of Schools cluster meeting, 5 p.m., Madison High School, Room 101, 4833 Doliva Dr. (92117). The Madison Community of Schools meets monthly to develop a strategic approach to improving schools that feed into Madison High School and is committed to a long-term investment in improving student success. Attendees include school administrators, teachers, parents and interested community members. *14  -- San Diego High cluster meeting, 5:30 p.m., San Diego High School Library, 1405 Park Blvd. (92101). The San Diego High cluster meets monthly to develop a strategic approach to improving schools that feed into San Diego High School and is committed to a long-term investment in improving student success. Attendees include school administrators, teachers, parents and interested community members. *14 – Lincoln High School cluster meeting, 6-7:30 p.m., Porter Elementary School-North Campus Auditorium, 445 S. 47th St. (92113). The Lincoln High cluster meets monthly to develop a strategic approach to improving schools and student achievement in the schools that feed into Lincoln High School. Attendees include school administrators, teachers, parents and interested community members. Contact: Shirley Wilson, Area Superintendent, (619) 725-7233. Open to the public.

 

*16 -- College Prep Day, 7:30 a.m. to 12:25 p.m., Hoover High School, 4474 El Cajon Boulevard (92115). All Hoover High students will participate in a campus-wide event that exposes students to college activities, including college preparatory benchmark exams or seminar. The San Diego State Aztec Warrior will kick-off the event to motivate students to start preparing for college. Contact:  Melissa Naranjo, (619) 344-4512. Not open to the public.

 

*16 – Scripps Ranch Schools Committee, 4:30-6:30 p.m., Scripps Miramar Ranch Library, 10301 Scripps Lake Dr. (92131). School administrators, teachers, parents and interested community members meet monthly to discuss issues regarding the schools that feed into Scripps Ranch High School. *17 -- Great California Shakeout, 10:17 a.m., all schools. As part of the statewide Great California Shakeout, San Diego Unified schools are conducting a full-scale earthquake drill, including duck-and-cover in classrooms, school evacuation procedures, and reporting into School Police. *17 -- Kearny Cluster meeting, 4:30-6 p.m., Kearny High Complex Room 301, 7651 Wellington St. (92111). Parents, principals, teachers, students and community members meet monthly to discuss the relevant school issues in that feed into Kearny High. *17 -- Clairemont Community of Schools cluster meeting, 5:30 – 7 p.m., Marston Middle School media center, 3799 Clairemont Drive (92117). The Clairemont Community of Schools is an organization of parents, students, teachers, principals and community members working together to strengthen the Clairemont community and build attendance at schools by Clairemont neighborhood families. 18 -- 60th Anniversary Homecoming, 3 p.m., Mission Bay High School, 2475 Grand Ave. (92109). Bucs play longtime rivals Kearny at 3 p.m. Contact: Fred Hilgers, Principal, (858) 273-1313. Open to the public.

 

18 -- Spreckels Elementary School Spooky Sprint Jog-a-Thon, 11:30 a.m., Spreckels Elementary School, 6033 Stadium St. (92122). Fundraiser for PTA and school, event brings community support and helps promote exercise. Contact Dr. Cecilia Fernandez, Principal, (858) 453-5377. Open to families and volunteers.

 

*19--Lindbergh Schweitzer Elementary School Fall Carnival, 12-3 p.m.,4133 Mt. Albertine Ave. (92111). Contact: Deanne Rohde, Principal, (858) 496-8400. Open to the public.

 

* 19 -- Parent Advocacy Workshop, 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Lafayette Elementary School, 6125 Printwood Way (92117). This free workshop is for families, and will provide support and training to parents about how to be the best advocate for their child, discussing the important issues affecting their child's education and what families can do about it. *19 -- Youth Workshop: Take Charge of Your Education, 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Lafayette Elementary School auditorium, 6125 Printwood Way (92117). *21 – Serra Cluster Meeting, 4:30-6 p.m., Farb Middle School, 4880 La Cuenta Drive (92124). 25 -- Loma Portal Elementary Monster Bash, 5-8 p.m., Loma Portal Elementary School, 3341 Browning St. (92106). There will be carnival games, grade-level costume contests, crafts, cake walk, face painting, bake sale, food from local restaurants, cookie & pumpkin decorating and much much more. 25 -- Deadline for Supplemental Education Services applications. Supplemental Education Services are required to be available under the federal No Child Left Behind act for students who attend schools on Program Improvement. *28--University City Cluster Committee, 4:30-6 p.m., University City High School Media Center, 6949 Genesee Ave. (92122). The UC City Cluster Committee is dedicated to improving educational endeavors and student achievement in the University City cluster. The committee has representatives from each of the five UC neighborhood schools including the principals, teachers, students and parents. *28--Mira Mesa Cluster School Council meeting, 5:30 p.m., Mira Mesa High School Media Center, 10510 Reagan Rd. (92126). The Mira Cluster School Council is dedicated to improving educational endeavors and student achievement in the Mira Mesa cluster. *29--State of the District Address, 4:30-7 p.m., Kearny High School, 7651 Wellington St. (92111). This year’s theme is Dream Big: Vision 2020. Board of Education President John Evans and Supt. Cindy Marten will be joined by employees, parents, teachers, students, elected officials and the community to provide an inside look on the upcoming school year. NOVEMBER

 

2 --  Curie Elementary School Craft Fair, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., 4080 Governor Drive (92122). Curie’s Annual PTA Holiday Craft Fair has been famous for more than three decades for its variety of homemade items. Information: curiecraftfair@gmail.com. Open to the public.

 

*5 -- Trayvon Martin- George Zimmerman Community Dialogue, 6-8 p.m., Eugene Brucker Education Center Auditorium, 4100 Normal St. (92103). This event will offer the opportunity for students to interact in a facilitated conversation with organizations that have partnered with San Diego Unified, including the NAACP, the Anti-Defamation League, the City of San Diego Human Relations Commission, Assemblymember Dr. Shirley Weber, and the District Attorney’s Office.
