DECEMBER

 

*6 -- Special Education Workshop for Parents, 9-2:30 p.m., Ballard Parent Center, 2375 Congress Street (92110). Free workshop for parents of students with disabilities on how to stand up for your child. Childcare and lunch provided. Spanish translation available. *6 -- Mural Installation and Ribbon-cutting, 4 p.m., Pacific Beach Middle School, corner of Felspar and Haines streets (92109). Another Pacific Beach Pathways “Establishing Safe Pathways to Walk and Roll to School” mural installation is being completed and unveiled. Open to the public. *8-12 -- The Hour of Code. Schools from across the district will be participating in this global event as part of Computer Science Education Week, Dec. 8-14. For example, Kearny High School students in the Geographic Information Systems class are creating an interactive map that will detail the number of students in San Diego Unified that are participating in The Hour of Code. *8 -- Swearing-In Ceremony and Reception, 5 p.m., Education Center, 4100 Normal Street (92103). District B Trustee Kevin Beiser and District C Trustee Michael McQuary will officially be sworn-in for their four-terms on the San Diego Unified Board of Education. Beiser’s Oath of Office will be administered by Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins; Rabbi Laurie Coskey and SCPA ASB President Deja Fields will administer the Oath of Office to McQuary. Open to the public. *9 -- Parent Workshop on Understanding the Common Core State Standards, 6-7:30 p.m., Ballard Parent Center, 2375 Congress Street (92110). Parents can learn about the depth of the new Common Core Standards and how they can support their student with different types of questions to promote critical thinking. Free, open to the public. *10 -- Community Resource Fair for School Counselors and Administrators, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Balboa Park Recital Hall, 2130 Pan American Plaza West (92101). San Diego Unified has partnered with the San Diego Commission on Gang Prevention and Intervention to host a community resource fair that will feature more than 70 community youth and family service providers. *11 -- Junior Achievement of SD, The Control Group Teach Code to HS Students, 7-11 a.m., Hoover High School, 4474 El Cajon Blvd (92115). In honor of Computer Science Education Week, Junior Achievement of San Diego and The Control Group are partnering to impact the lives of more than 80 students from Hoover High by teaching them how to write HTML code. The event is designed for Hoover Academy of Information Technology’s (AOIT) students who are currently taking high-level courses specifically designed for a future career in computer technology. *16 -- Parent Workshop on Understanding the Common Core State Standards for Mathematical Practice, 6-7:30 p.m., Ballard Parent Center, 2375 Congress Street (92110). Parents can learn about the major shifts that are taking place in math and then focus on the skills that all students use when solving mathematical problems of any kind. Free, open to the public. *19 -- All traditional schools and offices closed in observance of Martin Luther King Day.

 

* 20 -- All schools (traditional calendar and year-round calendar) and work sites are back in session.
