MEDIA ADVISORY from the San Diego Unified School District

Sept 4, 2015

FIRST DAY OF 2015-16 SCHOOL YEAR ACTIVITIES AT NEW JONAS SALK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

DETAILS: On Tuesday, Sept. 8, more than 110,000 students in the San Diego Unified School District will head back to school. Join Supt. Cindy Marten, Board Vice President John Lee Evans, school administrators, teachers, parents and students as we kick off the new school year at Jonas Salk Elementary School, opening its doors for the first time this year.

Jonas Salk Elementary is located in Mira Mesa and can accommodate up to 700 Transitional Kindergarten through fifth-grade students. The state-of-the-art facility was constructed on 7.6 acres, while 6.1 acres were transferred to the City of San Diego to expand adjacent Maddox Park and create a new joint-use playfield.   The campus houses 24 general purpose classrooms, 6 TK/Kindergarten classrooms, a multipurpose building with indoor/outdoor stages, library media learning center and lunch court area with shade shelter.

The new school is named after Dr. Jonas Salk, the American medical researcher and virologist who discovered and developed the first successful polio vaccine. He later founded the Salk Institute in La Jolla. The San Diego resident died in 1995. Peter Salk, MD, son of Jonas Salk and president of the Jonas Salk Legacy Foundation, will be on-hand to celebrate the opening of the new school that bears his father’s name.  Students will be encouraged to embrace and practice a philosophy of Dr. Salk encouraging dreaming and imagination:

“Hope lies in dreams, in imagination and in the courage of those who dare to make dreams into reality.” -- Jonas Salk
