MEDIA ADVISORY -- Students Install Rain Collection System to Keep School Garden Green

MEDIA ADVISORY from the San Diego Unified School District, January 26, 2016

STUDENTS INSTALL RAIN COLLECTION SYSTEM TO KEEP SCHOOL GARDEN GREEN

WHAT: Under the guidance of international rain harvesting specialist Amir Yechieli, students at Pacific Beach Middle International Baccalaureate World School will be installing an innovative rainwater collection system, as well as painting three rainwater collection barrels. The system will be used to irrigate the school's Waves of Green student garden. In addition to the hands-on experience of installing the rainwater-collection system, students will learn about sustainability and participate in research study by researchers from UC San Diego and the Salk Institute.

WHEN: 8-11:30 a.m. and 12:30-2:30 p.m., Thursday, January 28, 2016; and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, January 29, 2016.

WHERE: Pacific Beach Middle School, An International Baccalaureate World School, 4676 Ingraham St. San Diego, CA 92109.

BACKGROUND: Pacific Beach Middle School is participating in a three-school study by the UC San Diego Rady School of Management US Israel Center for Innovation and Economic Sustainability. Fellows from UC San Diego's Scripps Institution of Oceanography, as well as the Salk Institute, will be participating in the project, one of the first of its kind in the United States.

Ychieli is a science teacher in Jerusalem who invented a rainwater collection system. Since creating the system just before the turn of the 21st century, Ychieli's system has been "harvesting" rain runoff in Israel and arid nations around the world.

The project is funded through a grant from the Leichtag Foundation, which honors the legacy of Lee and Toni Leichtag through igniting and inspiring vibrant Jewish life, advancing self-sufficiency and stimulating social entrepreneurship in coastal North San Diego County and Jerusalem.

Other locations participating are Franklin Elementary, in San Diego's City Heights neighborhood, and the Encinitas Union School District's Farm Lab.

Students, teachers, as well as key members of San Diego Unified and local community, will be on hand for the project, interviews, and photographs with local press.
