City arts leaders, young musicians celebrate new school plan for arts education
San Diego Unified leaders detail arts plan to be voted on this week
San Diego Unified is planning a dramatic new focus on the arts in local schools under a new plan to be detailed Monday morning. The Strategic Arts Education Plan (SAEP) calls for new student resources, an updated curriculum, partnerships with other city cultural institutions and expanded access to arts magnet schools. The San Diego Unified Board of Education is scheduled to vote on the plan at its next meeting.

DETAILS: San Diego Unified Visual and Performing Art Director Russ Sperling will be joined for the plan's release by the heads of leading city cultural institutions Monday morning. The event will also feature a special performance by Elementary Teacher of the Year, Julie Szweda, and her class of 4th grade violin students.
Work on the Strategic Arts Education Plan began last spring and included more than 35 representatives of city arts organizations, teachers, administrators, parents, and students. Full copies of the plan will be provided at the press conference.
