Top One Percent of San Diego Unified High School Graduates to be Honored at 'Salute To Excellence'

Outstanding Students in Class of 2022 Honored at the San Diego Zoo

WHAT: San Diego Unified School District honors and celebrates the top one percent of graduating seniors at the annual Salute to Excellence event.

WHEN: 4-6 p.m., Wednesday, May 25, 2022.
Student interview availability: 4-4:30 p.m.
Reception from 4-4:50 p.m.
Ceremony begins at 5 p.m.

BACKGROUND: The event recognizes seniors ranked in the top one percent of their high school's class of 2022. More than 80 students with GPAs as high as 4.9 will be honored, including all high school valedictorians. Principals, counselors, parents, and other family members will be in attendance along with Board of Education trustees and Superintendent Dr. Lamont A. Jackson.


Ed Abeyta, UCSD Associate Dean and Director of Pre-College Programs, will serve as Master of Ceremonies. Education Ambassadors from the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance will welcome the attendees. Julianne Sue from Scripps Ranch High School is the student speaker. Musical entertainment is being provided by the Preservationists from Mission Bay High School.


This annual event brings together students from all San Diego Unified high schools. Students will be announced by their principals and receive a certificate and medal for their achievements. Among the schools that students will be attending in the fall are Princeton, Georgetown, Harvard, Vanderbilt University, UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, and UCLA.

PHOTOS/INTERVIEWS: Students and family members will be available to speak about their accomplishments and experiences. Each principal will introduce his/her students, and then move from the stage to outside the pavilion for photos; interviews can also be conducted there.
