Universal Transitional Kindergarten Pre-Enrollment Window Closing This Week

SAN DIEGO – The deadline for pre-enrollment in Universal Transitional Kindergarten closes Friday, May 20 at San Diego Unified School District.

Children who turn 4 years old by Sept. 1 are eligible for the full-day, free instruction that gives youngsters a head start on schooling and socialization before heading into kindergarten. Hours are aligned with each elementary school site’s normal schedule.

For the 2022-23 school year, San Diego Unified is broadening the availability of UTK by offering the program at all elementary schools in the district, with the exception of Language Academy, Logan Memorial Education Campus, Mt. Everest and Virtual Academy.

Each class features co-teachers and class sizes are capped at 24 students. As UTK spots fill up and because space at each school site is limited, your child may be offered enrollment outside your school of residence. More information can be found here.

“The benefits of early childhood education are clear and UTK provides the opportunity to set a child up for a lifetime of success,” said Stephanie Ceminsky, Director of Early Learning Programs. “We’re excited to expand the program to over 100 schools across San Diego Unified for the upcoming school year to get our littlest learners off to the best start possible.”

While UTK signup during the pre-enrollment window has been robust, some openings still remain in the Crawford, Lincoln, Hoover and Morse clusters. Click here to register.

As an added bonus for those who pre-enroll in Chollas Mead Elementary, part of the Lincoln cluster, illustrator Reggie Brown, a San Diego native and Chollas Mead alum, has donated several copies of his recent work for a free giveaway. Brown collaborated on “Who Are Your People?” It’s a tale steeped in pride, centering on two Black children learning about their familial and cultural legacy. The book is written by New York Times bestselling author and CNN contributor Bakari Sellers.

The book is available for those who pre-enroll at Chollas Mead while supplies last.
