STUDENTS FROM THROUGHOUT SOUTHWEST GATHER FOR ROBOT COMPETITION UNVEILING
WHAT -- Watch party for FIRST Robotics Competition 2011 Season Kickoff
WHEN/WHERE -- 7 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011, Kearny High School auditorium,
7651 Wellington St. (92111).
DETAILS: Each year, students from San Diego Unified and schools all over the
world compete in the FIRST Robotics Competition. The San Diego regional
competition will be held in the Sports Arena in March. Saturday's kickoff
brings the teams together to get their instructions -- what tasks the robots
must perform in competition -- from FIRST directors. Students here will
watch a live telecast over NASA TV at 7:30 a.m.
The FIRST Robotics Competition is an exciting, multinational competition
that teams professionals and young people together to solve an engineering
design problem in an intense and competitive way. The program is a
life-changing, career-molding experience and a lot of fun. Each year the
competition reaches more than 43,000 students on over 1,500 teams in
competitions held across the USA and in other parts of the world. The teams
come from Brazil, Canada, Chile, Israel, Mexico, the Netherlands, the U.K.,
and every state in the U.S. The competitions are high-tech spectator
sporting events, the result of lots of focused brainstorming, real-world
teamwork, dedicated mentoring, project timelines, and deadlines.
PHOTOS/INTERVIEWS: Students reportedly dress in wild costumes and may bring
some robots with them to demonstrate. Students will also be checking out the
"box of parts" they'll be using to build their robots.
