* 8 -- FIRST Robotics Regional Kickoff, 7 a.m., Kearny High School
auditorium, 7651 Wellington St. (92111). Each year, students from San Diego
Unified and schools all over the world compete in the FIRST Robotics
Competition. The San Diego regional competition will be held in the Sports
Arena in March. Saturday's kickoff brings the teams together to get their
instructions -- what tasks the robots must perform in competition -- from
FIRST directors. Students here will watch a live telecast over NASA TV at

8 -- Barnard Elementary Campus Work Day, all day, Barnard Elementary School,
2930 Barnard St. (92110). Join Principal Park and the Barnard PTA board

10 -- Challenger Middle School Campus Tour, 9:30-10:15 a.m., Challenger
Middle School, 10810 Parkdale Ave. (92126). Parents interested in enrolling
their 6th, 7th or 8th grader in Challenger for the 2011-12 school year are
encouraged to tour the school and apply through the Enrollment Options

13 -- Construction Tech Academy Facility Grand Opening, 10:30 a.m., Kearny
High Educational Complex, 7651 Wellington St. (92111). Grand opening of the
new facility, built with funds from San Diego Unified's Prop. S and

* 13 -- Loma Portal Elementary Winter Family Sock Hop, 6 p.m., Loma Portal
Elementary School, 3341 Browning St. (92106). Join us for this
family-friendly event. There's so much to do! We'll have free, all-ages
swing lessons from 5:30 to 6:00 pm. You and your family can dance the night
away while Dana Middle School's Jazz Band will be playing all of your

13 -- California Highway Patrol Smart Start Class, 6:30 p.m., Clairemont
High School, 4150 Ute Dr. (92117). The CHP's start smart program is a driver
safety education class which targets new and future licensed teenage drivers

21 34th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. March, 9:30 to 11 a.m., Knox
Preparatory School, 1098 S. 49th St. (92113). Elementary students from
throughout the district will come together and march through the
neighborhood carrying banners and posters promoting Dr. King¹s ideals.

22 -- School Choice Enrollment Fair, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Recital Hall, Balboa
Park. Parents can to obtain information on the various programs offered
within our District. Schools from across the district will participate in

* 25 -- Coordinated School Health and Wellness Council, 2:30 p.m., Revere
Center, 6735 Gifford Way (92111). The council meets to promote health
education, healthy eating and physical activity for staff and students
according to the coordinated school health model and in compliance with the
federal Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act (Healthy, Hunger Free

* 25 -- ReCentering Parenting, 6 p.m., Cherokee Point Elementary School,
3735 38th St. (92105). A six-week course that teaches parents, students,
guardians and grandparents power tools and real time strategies for
transforming students' academic and citizenship performance. Learn exactly
what it takes to create success in students' primary, secondary and post

* 26 -- Supporting Your Child's Special Learning Needs at Home, 6 p.m.,
Miller Elementary School, 4343 Shields St. (92124). Topics include:
Understanding and developing your child's ability to learn; creating and
structuring a school smart home; building positive parent-teacher
relationships; and specific strategies for supporting your child's learning

* 27 -- Mt. Everest Academy Physics Project Fair, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Mt.
Everest Academy, 4350 Clairemont Blvd. (92117). Laws of physics are
demonstrated in students' projects, including gravity, inertia, friction,

28 -- Dana Middle School Variety Show, 6:30 p.m., Dana Middle School, 1775

skateboarders, unicyclers, poets, magicŠ family entertainment at its finest!

* 29 -- Special Education "SibShop," 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Pt. Loma United

siblings with brothers/sisters with special needs. Lunch will be provided.
31 -- La Jolla High Fundraiser "Taste of La Jolla," 6-8:30 p.m., in
restaurants around La Jolla. 14th annual event sponsored by La Jolla High
School Foundation with all proceeds benefitting La Jolla High School

14 -- Ladies of Science in the City, 11 a.m., Serra High School, 5156 Santo
Rd. (92124). UCSD Chancellor Marye Anne Fox and 30 members of the Ladies of
Science program will visit with students and perform a pickle experiment
conducted by UCSD chemistry professor James Whitesell (the chancellor's

19-26 -- San Diego Science Festival, on SDUSD campuses and in various
locations around San Diego. More than 75,000 students, parents, scientists,
educators, and other community members are anticipated to take part in this
year's activities, with over 30,000 expected on Expo Day, a
