MEDIA ADVISORY -- French, Spanish or English? Language Academy Gives Sneak Peek to Saturday Enrollment Fair

MEDIA ADVISORY from the San Diego Unified School District, January 14, 2010

FRENCH, SPANISH OR ENGLISH? LANGUAGE ACADEMY GIVES SNEAK PEEK TO SATURDAY
ENROLLMENT FAIR

WHAT: Preview of San Diego Unified School District Enrollment Fair

WHEN: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2011

WHERE: Language Academy, 4961 64th Street (92115). Directions: From College
Ave., east on Montezuma Rd.; south on Art St.; east on Mesita Dr. to 64th
Street.

DETAILS: Ahead of the Feb. 15, 2011 Enrollment Options deadline, San Diego
Unified School District is inviting all of San Diego to its Third Annual
School Choice Fair, Saturday, Jan. 22, at the Recital Hall in Balboa Park.
To find out more about this event, we¹re inviting the media to visit one of
the unique choices available -- a French immersion class at the Language
Academy, one of San Diego Unified School District¹s Magnet Schools. As an
immersion school, students spend much of the day -- and lessons in all
subjects are taught -- in the new language. Given San Diego's diversity, we
have students who are already bilingual in English and Spanish -- and are
learning French at the Language Academy.

PHOTOS/SPEAKING: Reporters and photographers will be able to interview and
photograph students in class and on the playground (they go to recess at
11:15). In addition, Area Superintendent Tony Burks, Principal Veronika
Lopez-Mendez, District Magnet School officials, the teacher, parents and
school volunteers will be available for one-on-one interviews. There will be
no formal presentation. We also invite our television friends to load up on
b-roll for elementary school-age students.

ABOUT THE 2011 SCHOOL CHOICE FAIR

Back by popular demand, the 3rd Annual School Choice Fair will take place
from 10 a.m. To 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22 at the Balboa Park Recital Hall.

The free event will highlight schools and student performances from
throughout San Diego Unified. Families across the county can learn
first-hand about the many educational options available to students,
including parents who work but do not live within the district¹s attendance
boundaries.

Information about district-run schools, including neighborhood, magnet and
International Baccalaureate, as well as other innovative programs will be
available all in one place. Representatives from the Enrollment Office will
be available to answer school choice application questions.

More than 1,500 families attended last year's event.

The school choice open enrollment period ends Feb.15, 2011 for school year
2011-12. If parents/guardians wish to select a magnet or other neighborhood
school for their child, they need to apply by Feb. 15. San Diego Unified has
a wide variety of choices for education, ranging from traditional
neighborhood elementary and traditional, comprehensive high schools, to
small, specialty schools.
