Kearny High Educational Complex Hosts Open House for Its New Construction Tech Academy

 

WHAT:  San Diego Unified School District is inviting community members, industry professionals and project partners to an open house for the Stanley E. Foster Construction Tech Academy (CTA) at Kearny High Educational Complex.  CTA was the first project completed under the Proposition S bond measure passed in November 2008. The project transformed Kearny High’s former 17,250-square-foot metal and automotive shop building into a new home for CTA. The $1.8-million project was completed in 2010. The academy provides career and technical education in the residential and commercial construction pathway within the building trades and construction industry sector.

 

WHEN:  Thursday, Jan. 13, 2011, 10 to 11:30 a.m. (reception, three speakers and tour of the four-classroom facility).

 

WHERE:  7651 Wellington Street, San Diego (92111)  Directions: I-805 south to Hwy.163 south (no turn-off from I-805); exit Genesee Ave. west, north (right) on Linda Vista Road, left turn before school parking lot (look for sign). Or: Hwy.163 north or Int. 805 north, exit Mesa College Dr. west; south (left) on Linda Vista Rd., turn right to school parking lot.  The facility is located on the east side of Wellington, across from the gym and south of the main parking lotMedia parking will be available on site.

 

VISUALS:  Students working on an actual construction project (not a model), students working on engineering, robotics and art projects, student-led tours, new interactive classroom technology being used in the classrooms, and a solar greenhouse recently completed by Girls in Construction and sponsored by the San Diego Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction

 

INTERVIEWS:  Guest speakers including Laura Bellofatto, principal of Construction Tech Academy; Shawn Loescher, director of College, Career and Technical Education; and Stuart Markey, executive director of the Capital Improvement Bond Program (Proposition S); Lorelee Langworthy, president of the National Association of Women in Construction, San Diego Chapter; and a representative of the Associated General Contractors of America, Inc., which underwrites scholarships for the students to attend San Diego State University’s construction management program.  (Interviews available in English and Spanish)

 

BACKGROUND:  On November 4, 2008, nearly 69 percent of the voters in San Diego passed the $2.1 billion general obligation bond measure, Proposition S, so that San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) could repair, renovate and revitalize more than 200 schools.  The state-of-the facility is one of 22 College, Career & Technical Education projects being constructed under the Proposition S (local) and Proposition 1D (state) bond programs.

 

The project partners were Grahovac Construction and Platt/Whitelaw Architects Inc.
