REP. SUSAN DAVIS, REP. JARED POLIS, SUPERINTENDENT MARTEN VISIT FRANKLIN ELEMENTARY CLASSROOM, HOLD PRINCIPAL-TRAINING ROUND TABLE

WHAT: Classroom tours and a round table on principal training with U.S. Reps. Susan Davis (D-San Diego) and Jared Polis (D-Colorado), and Superintendent Cindy Marten.

WHEN: 2-3:15 p.m. Friday, April 8, 2016

WHERE: Franklin Elementary School, 4481 Copeland Ave, San Diego (92116). Parking is available only on the street.

DETAILS: Superintendent Marten will join Reps. Davis and Polis on a tour of Franklin Elementary School in the Kensington neighborhood, where Principal Don Whisman has shown leadership skills with his staff and students. During a classroom tour, visitors will see first-hand how technology is integrated into learning.

Rep. Davis (53rd District, California) began her political career as a member of the San Diego Unified Board of Education, serving from 1983-92. She is a co-author of federal legislation designed to improve recruitment and training of candidates for principals the nation's schools.

The School Leader Recruitment and Support Program distributed $16 million in grants for principal support, while new legislation co-authored by Davis would set up a competitive grant program to fund leadership and data-usage training, as well as a one-year residency and two-year followup programs.

Another proposal by Davis would allow forgiveness of student loans for principals working in schools with 30 percent or more of their students qualified for federal free and reduced-priced lunch.

Details on these efforts will be distributed at the event.

INTERVIEWS: Participants, including Reps. Davis and Polis, Supt. Marten, Principal Whisman, and other San Diego Unified principals, will be available for interviews before the round table. The round table is open for media attendance, photography and reporting.

PHOTOS: The Franklin Elementary classroom is open for photographs during the VIP tour. Students participating can be photographed and have parental media releases on file with the school. As not all students at the school have media releases from their parents, please limit photography while on campus to the designated areas of the toured classroom and round table room.

CHECK-IN: Visit the front office to sign in, then be escorted to the media area.
