Rep. Davis (53rd District, California) began her political career as a member of the San Diego Unified Board of Education, serving from 1983-92. She is a co-author of federal legislation designed to improve recruitment and training of candidates for principals the nation's schools.

The School Leader Recruitment and Support Program distributed $16 million in grants for principal support, while new legislation co-authored by Davis would set up a competitive grant program to fund leadership and data-usage training, as well as a one-year residency and two-year followup programs.

Another proposal by Davis would allow forgiveness of student loans for principals working in schools with 30 percent or more of their students qualified for federal free and reduced-priced lunch.
