SD UNIFIED HIGH SCHOOLS SCORE IN US NEWS RANKINGS
SAN DIEGO -- Three San Diego Unified high schools have received the prestigious Gold Award, with nine receiving Silver Awards in the 2016 national rankings of America's Best High Schools by US News and World Report magazine.
The School of International Studies at San Diego High, La Jolla High and Scripps Ranch High each received the highest recognition, the Gold Award, given to the top 500 of the nation's more than 28,000 high schools. US News annually evaluates schools based on their students' college readiness.
Silver Awards went to University City High, Pt. Loma High, Serra High, San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA), Patrick Henry High, Kearny High School of Science Connections and Technology, Mission Bay High, Clairemont High, San Diego Early/Middle College, Mira Mesa High, Morse High, and the School of Science and Technology at San Diego High.
"This is well-deserved national recognition for our high schools," said Superintendent Cindy Marten. "Every day, our students, teachers and staff are working hard to learn and prepare for the future. Their success is a cause for celebration for not only those campuses, but everyone in our district."
Of the 28,561 high schools analyzed by US News, only 6,000 received gold, silver or bronze awards. According to the magazine, it evaluates schools based on four steps.
"The first three steps ensured that the schools serve all of their students well, using their performance on the math and reading parts of their state proficiency tests and graduation rates as the benchmarks," the magazine writes on its website. "For those schools that made it past the first three steps, a fourth step assessed the degree to which schools prepare students for college-level work."
