High School Students Learn about Civil Rights Movement Up Close, Personal

Congressman John Lewis shares his experiences as a civil rights leader, politician, graphic novel author via Skype

 

 

WHAT:  Students from high schools across San Diego Unified will participate in a Skype session with Congressman John Lewis, civil rights leader and the last living speaker from the1965 March on Washington. Lewis will be talking about a variety of topics including his autobiographical graphic novel series: “March, Books 1-3.” In addition, he will be sharing his experience as a freedom rider, participant in a lunch-counter sit-in, and his friendships with key figures in the Civil Rights Movement including Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Bayard Rustin. Local comics artist—Eric Shanower—will attend in person to share his career in comics along with tips and pointers in the graphic story-telling medium.
