'SALUTE TO EXCELLENCE' FOR TOP ONE PERCENT OF SAN DIEGO UNIFIED HIGH SCHOOL GRADS: Outstanding Students in Class of 2016 Honored at Annual Event

WHAT: 2016 "Salute to Excellence"

WHEN: 4-6 p.m., Wednesday, May 25, 2016. Reception from 4-4:30 p.m.; ceremony begins at 4:30 p.m.

WHERE: Nautilus Pavilion, Sea World, 500 Sea World Drive, 92109

BACKGROUND: The event recognizes seniors ranked in the top one percent of their high school's Class of 2016. More than 75 students will be honored including all high school valedictorians. Principals, counselors, parents and other family members will be in attendance along with Board of Education members and Supt. Cindy Marten. Ed Abeyta, UCSD Assistant Dean for Community Engagement and

Director, Pre-College and Career Preparation Programs, will serve as Master of Ceremonies. Laura Slanec, SeaWorld’s Director of Education and Conservation, will welcome the attendees. Karla Rodriguez from Clairemont High School is the student speaker. Musical entertainment is being provided by the Mission Bay High School Jazz Trio “The Last Minute.”

 

This annual event brings students together from all San Diego Unified high schools, where they receive a certificate and a medal marking their achievement. Some of these students are the first in their families to go to college.

 

PHOTOS/INTERVIEWS: Students and family members will be on hand to speak on their challenges in achieving academic excellence. Each principal will introduce his/her students, then move from the stage to outside the pavilion for photos; interviews can also be conducted there.
