Budget Town Halls Continue Tonight, Tomorrow

Tuesday, Wednesday Meetings Discuss Upcoming Budget Cuts

SAN DIEGO -- The third and fourth in a series of budget town-hall meetings
to talk about the future of education funding in the San Diego Unified
School District are this week: 6:30 p.m. tonight at Madison High School and
6:30 p.m. tomorrow at Mission Bay High School.

"As Town Hall meetings are held in each area of the city, people are
becoming aware of the upcoming draconian cuts in education,² said Board
Member John Lee Evans, who will host tonight¹s meeting. ³Last year the Board
approved nearly $150 million in cuts that included central office,
transportation and outside contracts. We tried to keep the cuts as far away
from the classroom as possible.

"With potential cuts of $200 million, the student in the classroom will be
severely affected. At this Town Hall we will address whether we as a
community are willing to have education so inadequately funded. We need to
decide as taxpayers what is important to us.

"We can continue to streamline, but do we want to dramatically increase
class size? Do we want to chop months off the school year? I want to hear
what the community sees as its priorities. I will take that back to the
school board as we develop a budget with very limited funds. Tonight is the
opportunity for citizens to weigh in.

"What we have found out from the previous Town Halls is that people do not
want to stand for these proposed cuts. At this meeting we will explore ways
for San Diegans to unite behind better funding for education."
