Kearny, SCPA Reopen Wednesday
Health Agencies' Decision Means School Is Back in Session
SAN DIEGO - Two San Diego Unified schools closed due to the H1N1 virus
have been told by health authorities that they can reopen, so the "next
first day of school" will be tomorrow, Wednesday, May 6.
The Kearny High Educational Complex in Clairemont Mesa East and San
Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts in Bay Terraces will
welcome back students, teachers and staff tomorrow morning.
The County of San Diego's Health and Human Services Agency gave the
go-ahead on Tuesday, following guidelines that were revised Tuesday by
the federal Centers for Disease Control. Kearny and SCPA staff and
students -- along with students who attend other schools but live in a
home with a Kearny or SCPA student -- and do not exhibit signs of
illness, can return.
According to health authorities, students and staff should stay home
from any school if they exhibit the following symptoms: a 100-degree or
higher fever, along with cough, sore throat or other suspect acute
respiratory symptoms.
"I'm sure our students and faculty are eager to get back to work at
these very special schools," said Superintendent Terry Grier. "I want to
thank everyone -- parents, students, teachers and staff -- for being
understanding during this period."
Both schools were closed late Friday by the county. They received a
thorough cleaning on Monday and today.
"Thanks to our hard-working Physical Plant Operations staff, both Kearny
and SCPA have been thoroughly cleaned," said Superintendent Terry Grier.
"Students and staff should feel safe about returning to school."
