Two San Diego Unified Schools Close Due To H1N1 Virus
Order Affects Kearny, School of Creative and Performing Arts
SAN DIEGO - The Kearny High Educational Complex and San Diego School of
Creative and Performing Arts will be closed for up to two weeks as a
precaution after probable infections of the H1N1 virus were found in one
student at each school.
The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency ordered the
schools closed Friday, May 1. Under federal Centers for Disease Control
guidelines, the scheduled reopening date for the schools is Monday, May
18. If it is found that the students do not have the virus, the schools
will be reopened, Dr. Wilma Wooton, San Diego County Public Health
Officer, said at a news conference on Friday, May 1.
"We're wishing these students a speedy recovery," said Superintendent
Terry Grier. "These precautions are being taken to protect the other
students and staff at these schools."
Parents/guardians at the schools have been notified by recorded
telephone messages from Grier and their principal, and by e-mail. Issues
with homework and missed class time will be resolved in the near future.
During the next 7 days, students and staff are asked to watch for
symptoms of the flu including fever, cough, sore throat, body aches,
headache, chills and fatigue. If these symptoms surface, a physician
should be consulted. In addition, health authorities are asking
parents/guardians not to allow children to congregate in large groups.
Siblings who attend different schools may go to school as usual.
However, symptoms develop, please keep them home.
New information, as it becomes available, will be posted on the
district's website, at www.sandi.net. Updated H1N1 virus information is
on the county's website at www.sdcounty.ca.gov, or, for San Diego County
residents, by calling 211.
