4 -- Day of the Teacher Celebration, 5 p.m., Montgomery Middle School, 2470

individual teachers for the 2009-10 school year. Teachers of the Year will
be named for the elementary, middle and high schools. Student musicians will
perform and members of the culinary arts program will provide hors

the Independent Citizens Oversight Committee for Proposition S, the $2

6 -- Annual Volunteer and Partner Salute, 4-6 p.m., Sea World, 500 Sea World

6 -- District English Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC), 6:30 p.m., Ballard

committee, which monitors issues affecting students who are English-language

* 7 -- Christening of SS Sunny, 3 p.m., San Diego bayfront west of County
Administration Building, 1600 Pacific Highway. Assembly member Lori Saldaña
will christen the SS Sunny, a boat built by students at the School of
Science and Technology at San Diego High to compete in the Solar Cup,
sponsored by the Southern California Metropolitan Water District. Students
and staff from San Diego High will be on hand for the festivities.

salute and a song by one of the classrooms, then to meet with Principal
Derek Murchison to hear about upcoming events, learn about school data and
have a question and answer session. Finally, the parents/guardians are sent
to the classrooms from 10-10:30 a.m. to read with the students. Contact:

Chelsea's Light Foundation, the invitational race is being offered to
deserving students throughout the district. The purpose is to honor the
memory of Chelsea and the qualities she stood for: athletic excellence,
academic achievement, and community outreach. Students must register by May
