Hundreds of Local Sixth Graders Pledge to Say NO to Tobacco Use
Monroe Clark Middle School Expected to Set a World Record for Tobacco Prevention Awareness

WHAT: In honor of the Great American Smokeout, 369 sixth graders at Monroe Clark Middle School will team up with Kaiser Permanente San Diego to "Say NO, Monroe," a public pledge to never try tobacco products. The students will participate in an hour-long workshop that will demonstrate the harmful effects of tobacco, marketing strategies designed to lure youth, real cost of smoking and the harmful impacts of diseases caused by tobacco. The students will attempt to set a Guinness Book of World Records for the Most Number of Attendees to participate in a Tobacco Awareness Program. An official Guinness Book of World Record adjudicator will be on hand to announce the moment the record is set.
In 1997, nearly half (48%) of male high school students and more than one-third (36%) of female students reported using some form of tobacco -- cigarettes, cigars, or smokeless tobacco products-in one month. The percentages went down to 30% for male students and 22% for female students in 2009.
