And, UNBEKNOWNST to him, a local tennis pro will be honored with a ceremony naming the tennis center after him on the same day as his 89th birthday (Friday).

WHEN:  Friday, May 31, starting at 10 a.m.

WHERE: Roosevelt Middle School, 3366 Park Blvd., SD 92103
School phone: 619-293-4450 School website: http://rooseveltmiddle.org
Media parking available adjacent to ceremony and tennis/basketball facility (map available)

VISUALS: Unveiling banner bearing new name of the tennis center, Roosevelt MS cheerleaders performing, students playing on tennis and basketball courts, display boards of namesake for new tennis center, participants singing Happy Birthday to namesake (accompanied by Helix Charter HS band), presentation of proclamation from board of education, Roosevelt MS student speaker, Bill Walton as master of ceremonies, and guest speakers

GUEST SPEAKERS/INTERVIEWS: Principal Arturo Cabello (welcome), Bill Walton, NBA Hall of Fame inductee and Junior Seau Foundation board member; Lilian Shallow, Roosevelt MS seventh-grader; tennis center namesake and alumnus of Roosevelt MS (see info below); Richard Barrera, San Diego Unified board trustee; Todd Gloria, San Diego City Council president; Franklin Johnson, U.S. Tennis Association past president and Roosevelt MS alumnus. (Interviews available in Spanish.)

TENNIS CENTER NAMESAKE: EMBARGOED UNTIL 10:30 A.M. MAY 31 The recently renovated tennis/basketball courts are named in honor of Ben Press, a 1939 graduate of then Roosevelt Junior High School. After leaving Roosevelt, Press went on to have a long and highly respected career in tennis earning 10 national titles from the U.S. Professional Tennis Association (USPTA). As a player, Ben was a top ranking junior as well as a senior standout. His name is on the prestigious "champions list" of the 1951 La Jolla Tournament. He claimed three U.S. Tennis Assoc. (USTA) senior national doubles titles and represented the United States four times in the Gordon Cup, an international competition. Often referred to as "Mr. Tennis," Ben has been teaching tennis for 60 years (Kona Kai, Hotel Del Coronado and San Diego Hilton). He is credited for teaching San Diego's only Wimbledon champions, Maureen Connolly and Karen Hantze Susman. Other notable former students were: Brian Teacher, Marita Redondo, Kristeen Kemmer, Angelica Gavaldon, Steve Avoyer, Randy Thomas, and Alexandra Stevenson. Ben served two terms as president of both the San Diego District Tennis Association and. USPTA. Finally, he is recognized as the first San Diegan to be awarded the National Community Service Award from both the USTA and the USPTA.

TENNIS/BASKETBALL COURTS PROJECT: The renovation project included removing the former basketball and tennis structures, and replacing it with eight new basketball and tennis courts. All of the courts were converted from asphalt to a state-of-the-art hard court surface.  Metal tennis nets were replaced by conventional nets; and the basketball post and goals were upgraded to high performance levels. The total project cost was approximately $60,000, which came from a variety of foundations and private donors. The school used $10,000 of its Proposition S Site Discretionary funds for the project.

Why: San Diego Unified is one of only four urban school districts in the country to be in the running for the 2013 Broad (rhymes with "road") Prize for Urban Education and $550,000 in scholarships. San Diego was chosen as a finalist in March for having topped 71 other large urban districts nationwide in making student gains. This is the first time that the San Diego Unified School District has been a finalist since the award was started in 2002.

The Broad Prize is awarded annually by The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation, a national education philanthropy based in Los Angeles that seeks to ensure that every student in an urban public school has the opportunity to succeed. The award honors urban school districts that demonstrate the greatest overall performance and improvement in student achievement in the nation while reducing income and ethnic achievement gaps.

The winning school district, which will be announced on Sept. 25 at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., will receive $550,000 in college scholarships for high school seniors who graduate in 2014. Each finalist district will receive $150,000 in scholarships. Seventy-five large urban school districts nationwide were eligible for the 2013 Broad Prize. Other finalist districts this year are: Cumberland County Schools, N.C., the Corona-Norco Unified School District in Riverside County, Calif. and the Houston Independent School District. For more information, please visit www.broadprize.com.

The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation was founded by entrepreneur Eli Broad and his wife Edythe, both graduates of Detroit Public Schools. Bringing together top education experts and practitioners, the foundation funds system-wide programs and policies that strengthen public schools by creating environments that allow good teachers to do great work and enable students of all backgrounds to learn and thrive.

NEWS RELEASE--Scripps Ranch High School

NEWS RELEASE SENT ON BEHALF OF SAN DIEGO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD TRUSTEE SCOTT BARNETT,  MAY 15, 2013

Barnett say's ‘twerking’ suspensions too severe, could impact college admission

"Students AND administrators showed poor judgment."

Say's students should apologize and principal should rescind suspensions

Today, SD Unified school board trustee released a statement on the so-called "Twerking Incident."

"My overall view of this 'twerking  Incident' is that I believe all parties, both students and administrators showed poor judgment."

While stating that he found parts of the video to be "highly offensive," he stated that poor judgment should not result in an overly severe punishment: "Suspension for 'sexual harassment,' which would be on their records, could do harm to the students’ academic future."

Barnett indicated that the principal has the authority to "expunge" the suspensions.

"My hope is the students will apologize, and the principal will rescind the suspensions," he said. This can all be ended quickly and equitably.

Full statement released by Trustee Scott Barnett, May 15, 2013

We all do and say things in life which we regret. We all make mistakes.  As a school board trustee, I have on several occasions publicly apologized for errors in judgment and mistakes I have made.

We all need to take responsibility for our actions and our words.

I have two teen-aged daughters at another San Diego Unified high school. One has been going through the college application process which as a parent, I have learned is highly grueling, competitive, and a stressful process for children and parents alike.

In my time as a San Diego Unified parent and a board trustee I have developed an even greater respect and understanding of the difficult job school site administrators have.  The job of being a principal is especially difficult in these times of the social media.  As a board trustee I have had excellent relationships and learned much from many of principals on how to best manage school sites. As a board trustee I cannot and do not DIRECT principals to take any action on any specific issue impacting their school sites. Principals report to their area superintendents who ultimately report to the superintendent.

As a parent I strongly believe that we need to set high expectations for our children's public and private behavior.

As a school board trustee I believe San Diego Unified has a legal and ethical decision to set proper guidelines on appropriate behavior and to enforce the discipline.

I will not today or at any time discuss any specific student's academic record or behavior outside of the context of legally constituted closed session.

I do not know any of the students, I do not know their names and my comments are addressing what is now known as the "twerking incident," and the resulting uniform punishment of suspensions.

That said, as a board trustee I have the following comments:

Based on all information known to me, I believe proper process and procedures and legal requirements were followed by all district staff involved.

However, I also believe it was the suspensions approved by district administrators was what resulted in the international attention and embarrassment to the school and students.

I viewed the video and found parts of it to be personally offensive and inappropriate and should not have been produced by students on school time and non school time.

At the same time I spend a lot of time with teenagers as a parent, a soccer coach, and a school board trustee.  I, on occasion hear language and music and see behavior by teenagers that I find very offensive and even shocking.  I do not like it but it's a reflection of our times.

My overall view of this "twerking incident" is that I believe all parties, both students and administrators showed poor judgment.

I believe every student who participated in the video showed poor judgment and should be held accountable for their actions. If either of my daughters were involved in and agreed to be filmed in ways I saw on the video, I would ensure there were consequences enacted by me and their mother, and want there to be consequences at school including at the very least a public apology and appropriate punishment such as a lunch detention, writing a paper on actions taken or other relevant consequences.

At the same time I believe the punishment meted out (two-day suspensions for sexual harassment) was overly severe in that it could cause significant damage to a student's academic future, possibly harming their ability to get into their college of choice.

I am hopeful that all parties involved, both students and district administrators acknowledge that further thought should have occurred prior to the decisions they made.

The principal does have the authority to remove the student suspensions, which would then remove the suspensions from the student's record.

The students involved also have an opportunity to apologize to the school community for their participation in this incident.

In conclusion, as a board trustee my primary responsibility is the health, safety and academic success of our children.  That means supporting educators and administrators in their work, but also ensuring all actions are in the best interest of students.
