Transitional Kindergarten available at all schools in 2014-15

Transitional Kindergarten, for students who have their fifth birthday between Sept. 2 and Dec. 2, will now be held at all San Diego Unified elementary school campuses when the 2014-15 school year begins in September. Families can register their eligible students at their neighborhood school or, through March 7, can request to attend another campus through the Choice Program.  Read more.
 
Board President Beiser honored as 'Music Legislative Leader of the Year'

The California Music Educators Association (CMEA) has presented Kevin Beiser, San Diego Unified School District's Board President, with the 2013 CMEA Legislative Music Leadership Award. Beiser had earlier received recognition from the San Diego chapter of the CMEA, which nominated him for the statewide honor. Read more.
 
Auditors give SD Unified Propositions S and Z an 'A'

An independent audit of the district's Propositions S and Z bond programs gave the district the highest audit opinion that a school bond program can receive. The audit performed by Christy White Associates of San Diego gave the school district its fifth straight "unmodified" audit opinion on both the performance and financial audits for the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2013. Vision 2020 Forums are set for Saturday and Monday

Stakeholders have two more opportunities in the next few days to weigh in on the future direction of San Diego Unified. The "Vision 2020 Forums: What Kinds of Schools Do We Want" are scheduled for 3-5 p.m., on Saturday, March 1, at Patrick Henry High School (rescheduled from Feb. 18), and 7-9 p.m., on Monday, March 3, at Mira Mesa High. California Dept. of Education warns public of potential telemarketing scam

Concerned citizens have been calling the California Department of Education to ask whether the state agency has telephoned their homes asking about the Preliminary SAT® (PSAT), a standardized test, which gives students firsthand practice for the college entrance examination. The agency is warning the public not to share any personal information on the telephone with unsolicited callers. Read more.

California All-State Orchestra includes seven San Diego Unified students

The annual California All-State Orchestra, which brought together the top student-musicians to perform, included seven students from San Diego Unified School District in 2014. Musicians were included from Patrick Henry, Mira Mesa, Point Loma, Scripps Ranch high schools; and Wangenheim Middle. Read more.
 
Students honor Black History Month with songs, performances

Students from Porter Elementary, Knox Middle, Lincoln High and the School of Creative and Performing Arts staged a variety of performances at the Feb. 25 Board of Education meeting in honor of Black History Month. Fourth-grader Edmund Ives from Porter Elementary started the celebration by sharing why Black History Month is important to him; theater students from Lincoln followed with a Shakespeare performance; Kimie Parker, SCPA junior, then performed a dance excerpt from Donald McKayle's – 'Rainbow Round My Shoulder.' The celebration ended with a Knox student reciting Dr. King's "I Have a Dream' speech and the school's string quartet performing "Songs of Freedom." Watch video.
 
$20,000 in grants to University City schools by local supporters

Teachers from all five University City public schools received grants from a pool of $20,000 raised by the neighborhood's school-support organization, EdUCate! The organization commits at least one-third of its donations to teachers each year. The Teacher Grant committee carefully considers and scores all grant applications on several factors, including the number of students the grant will impact, its educational value and the project's longevity. Birney Elementary students collect 2,249 lbs. of shoes in Great Kindness Challenge

More than 2,000 pairs of shoes — weighing 2,249 pounds — have been collected by Birney Elementary School students as part of their second Great Kindness Challenge. The 2,249 pounds of shoes, all usable and paired, will be sorted and delivered to developing nations by the organization Shoes with Heart. They filled 90 large, green trash bags, packaged and delivered to the charity. Read more.
 
Props. S & Z Update: Mission Bay High breaks ground on new stadium and fields

Mission Bay High School recently celebrated the beginning of a major renovation project on its stadium, softball field and baseball field. Students, parents, community members and staff marked the start of construction with a groundbreaking ceremony on Feb. 12. This nearly $12.5 million project is funded by San Diego Unified School District's Proposition Z, the general obligation bond measure approved by voters in 2012. Read more.
 
District's student stores compete for top honors

The team from Serra High School's Super-Q Store won first place in the annual Student Store competition with a strategy of using mobile racks to reach more students on their campus and bringing in vendors to do product sampling promotions. Second place went to the team from Clairemont High's Chief Hut, who implemented an express line for a top-selling product, and third place went to the team from Kearny High's Komet Corner, who tested a combo meal strategy, pairing top selling items with less popular items. The Community Advisory Committee for Special Education, in collaboration with San Diego Unified Special Education Department, will be honoring individuals who have contributed above and beyond the usual expectation in the area of special education. Nominations may include students, family members, community members or staff members who have been exemplary in their commitment to improve educational outcomes, including social, life and vocational skills of students with disabilities. Don't miss the Honor Theater Production: 'Snapshot: A Dramatic Anthology'

San Diego Unified School District Visual and Performing Arts Department and the Scripps Ranch High Falcon Playhouse present The 6th Annual Honor Theatre Project Feb. 28 and March 1. A photograph captures and documents a single moment in time and space -- a snapshot of history, of a reality bounded by the photo's frame. "Snapshot, A Dramatic Anthology" asks what lies outside, beyond, behind the photograph? The performance is recommended for middle school students and above due to mature subject matter. Read more.

Finish Chelsea's Run March 1

The 4th annual Finish Chelsea's Run in honor of Chelsea King will be held this Saturday, March 1 at 7:30 a.m. in Balboa Park. Parents and students of all ages are invited to run or walk the scenic 5K route or the new "Short & Sweet" one-mile route. A family festival with interactive displays, hands-on activities for all ages, entertainment, refreshments and more will follow the race. Funds raised will continue to fuel the Chelsea's Light Sunflower Scholarship Fund and the expansion of Chelsea's Law, as well as benefit Girl Scouts San Diego. Read more.
 
ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Math and Science Scholarships

Named for the first African American to walk in space, ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Math and Science Scholarships are available to 2014 graduating high school seniors. Four scholarships for two males and two females - $5,000 each - will be awarded to two African American and two Hispanic students on behalf of the former NASA astronaut, physician and businessman, Dr. Bernard Harris. Deadline for submissions is April 7, 2014. Read more.
