Mission Bay High School Breaks Ground on Stadium and Athletic Fields Project

WHAT:  San Diego Unified School District's Mission Bay High School is beginning a major renovation project on its stadium, softball field and baseball field. Students, parents, community members and staff will celebrate the start of construction with a groundbreaking ceremony tomorrow.

WHEN: Wednesday, Feb. 12, 9-10 a.m.

WHERE: Mission Bay High School stadium, 2475 Grand Ave., San Diego 92109 -- Media parking will be available on site. (From Grand Ave., take Lee Street south.)

VISUALS: Student athletes in uniforms, cheerleaders, ceremonial ground breaking, architectural rendering, construction signage and equipment

GUEST SPEAKERS/INTERVIEWS: Mission Bay HS student athletes, Scott Barnett, Board of Education trustee; Fred Hilgers, Mission Bay High School principal; Pam Dietz, Alumni Association president, and Lee Dulgeroff, executive director of Facilities Planning and Construction (department that implements capital facilities bond program). Parents who actively sought these improvements will also be available for interviews.

PROJECT INFO: This nearly $13 million project is funded by San Diego Unified School District's Proposition Z, the general obligation bond measure approved by voters in 2012. The project includes:

Football Stadium:
. Existing football field and track replaced with new synthetic turf field and all-weather track
. New accessible bleachers,1,600-seating capacity on the home side and 800-seating capacity on the visitors' side
. A new press box with elevator for Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility
. A new athletic facilities building (approx. 3,648 square feet) that includes an accessible ticket booth, restrooms and concession stand for home and visitors, and storage area for athletic equipment.
. New football stadium lighting and sound system
. A new scoreboard and goal posts
. A new an athletic equipment storage facilities (approx. 2,160 square feet)
. New home and visitor entrance gates

Softball Field:
. Existing softball field relocated and re-constructed with new synthetic turf
. New ADA accessible dugouts, bleachers, concession stand and announcer's booth
. New backstop, fencing and scoreboard

Baseball Field:
. New ADA accessible bleachers, announcer's booth and concession stand

The district's project partners are T.B. Penick & Sons, Inc. (general contractor) and Zagrodnik and Thomas Architects. Construction is scheduled to be completed during spring 2015.
