FEBRUARY
* 13-15 Shrek the Musical, 7 p.m. (most performances), Mira Mesa High
School Theater, 10510 Reagan Rd. (92126). Collaboration between Mira Mesa
High Performing Arts Department and College, Career and Technical
Education Arts Management and Technical Theatre to produce the Broadway
hit Shrek: The Musical. More than 150 students make up the cast, orchestra
and theater technicians. This is the annual musical following a rich
history of productions including Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera and

14 -- Lincoln Day holiday. All schools and offices closed.
15 -- 57th Annual Massing of the Colors and Service of Remembrance, 10:30
a.m., Balboa Park, Spreckels Organ Pavilion, Balboa Park, 1549 El Prado
(92101). This inspiring patriotic service is a tribute to our flag, those
who are serving our nation, and those who sacrificed their lives in
defense of our continued freedom. The San Diego Chapter of the Military
Order of World Wars organizes this annual event with JROTC color guards,
civic organizations, veteran¹s groups, US Marine Corps Band, military

18 -- Superintendent asks San Diegans to "dream together" and chart course
for schools, 5:30-7:30 p.m., Patrick Henry High School, 6702 Wandermere
Dr. (92120). Sub-District B representative and Board President Kevin
Beiser hosts this "Vision 20/20 Forum" which provides input on what is
working, what could be improved upon, and how will the district and
community work together to accomplish the district¹s Vision 2020. The
answers to these questions will help chart the course of California's

* 19 -- National Math and Science Institute Grant Announcement,
(tentative), 10:30 a.m., Serra High School, 5156 Santo Rd. (92124). The
high school has received a grant of more than $700,000 to help students
learn math and science. Date and time of announcement are tentative;

20 -- Evening with UC San Diego, 6 p.m., Lincoln High School, 4777
Imperial Avenue. Sponsored by CalSOAP, the event is for parents and
students to learn about post-high school options, including attending UC
San Diego. Alumni and leaders from UC San Diego and the San Diego Unified
School District will be on hand to discuss college life, financial aid and
other issues. San Diego Unified School District Superintendent Cindy
Marten and Dr. Pradeep K. Khosla, Chancellor of UC San Diego, are

* 20 -- Common Core State Standards Mathematics Presentation, 5:40 p.m.,

representative will be on hand to talk about the shift to common core and
how it will change math curriculum. We will also look at math pathways for
secondary schools and how parents can support their students at home.

* 22 -- Military Pathways: College to Success, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., UC San

22 -- CalSOAP Cash for College/FAFSA Workshop, 9 a.m., Hoover High School,
4474 El Cajon Blvd. (92115). College-bound students are invited to this
free workshop to learn about how to get money for college and the Free
Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Information on the Dream Act
will also be available and participants can win a $1,000 scholarship.

24 -- Superintendent asks San Diegans to "dream together" and chart course
for schools, 7-9 p.m., Mission Bay High School, 2475 Grand Ave. (92109).

provides input on what is working, what could be improved upon, and how
will the district and community work together to accomplish the district¹s
Vision 2020. The answers to these questions will help chart the course of

* 26 -- Honor Theater Performance, "Snapshot," Scripps Ranch High School
theater, 10410 Treena St. (92123). Honor theater brings together the top
theater students in San Diego Unified in one show. Performances are Feb.

* 8 -- Clairemont High School Baseball Fundraiser, 10 a.m., Ernie Beck
Field, Clairemont High School, 4150 Ute Dr. (92117). Players gather
pledges on how far they can hit a baseball; contest is held this day.

8 -- Auditions for the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts, 8
a.m., San Diego School for Creative and Performing Arts, 2425 Dusk Dr.
(92113). Learn about the audition process for high school students. SCPA
is celebrating its 36th year as a public arts magnet high school, and
features five majors and 11 programs of study in the arts, plus an
outstanding academic curriculum. Students in grades 9-12 must audition to

* 21 -- Curie Elementary School Multi-Cultural Fair, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.,
Curie Elementary School, 4080 Governor Dr. (92122). At our annual
Multi-Cultural Fair all children will get a taste of some of the many
cultures and nationalities that are represented at our school. Contact:

22 -- JROTC Cadet Ball, 5 p.m., Town & Country Resort, Atlas Ballroom, 500
Hotel Circle North (92118). JROTC Cadets and dignitaries from the San
Diego Unified School District will participate in the annual Cadet Ball to
honor military traditions, proper etiquette, customs and courtesies. This
social event develops cadet citizenship and social skills in a formal

* 22 -- La Jolla High School Foundation annual fundraiser, 6 p.m., Green

26 -- Patrick Henry High Performing Arts Center groundbreaking, 3:30 p.m.,
Patrick Henry High School, 6702 Wandermere Drive (92120). The school's
long-awaited auditorium and other improvements begin construction with
this ceremony. Portions of the project are being funded by voter-approved

APRIL
12 -- Fast Times 5K, 7 a.m., De Anza Cove, Mission Bay. Five-kilometer run
benefits schools in the Clairemont neighborhood, including Clairemont and
Madison high schools. Sponsored by the Clairemont Hills Kiwanis and

* Teen Job Fair, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Roberts Family Branch, Boys and Girls
