BACKGROUND: This annual event is in its seventh year and connects business partners with students and teachers to develop a strong foundation for the economic future for San Diego. Students will exhibit products they produced and business problems they solved in collaboration with members of the local business community. More than 300 industry professionals volunteered to be mentors, guest speakers, or advisors for our students.

The Showcase is a culminating event for teachers who participated in the 2013 Project Based Learning (PBL) Summer Institute professional development opportunity, organized and led by staff of the San Diego Unified School District's Office of College, Career & Technical Education (CCTE). PBL involves collaboration with business members outside the classroom on a real-world project or problem.

High school teachers may enter their students in one of two contest categories, High School Team Project or High School Open Project, both of which must include collaboration with at least one adult from the business community. The Team Project must have a minimum of one Career Technical Education (CTE) teacher and one core academic subject teacher working together with any number of students. The Open Project must be completed by a CTE student or CTE students who are not taught by an interdisciplinary team of teachers. Middle school teachers have their own category, must include collaboration with at least one adult from the business community and include CTE students who may or may not have been part of an interdisciplinary team.

The Showcase Panel of Judges is comprised of student teachers from the School of Teacher Education, College of Education, San Diego State University; members of the greater San Diego business community; and personnel from the Office of Teaching and Learning of the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD).

Prizes will be awarded in each category. Champion teams will receive banners to display at their school site and teachers associated with the teams will receive extra funds in their 2014-2015 Instructional Supplies budget. The Showcase is open to the public. There is no charge to attend the event.
