'SALUTE TO EXCELLENCE' FOR TOP ONE PERCENT OF SAN DIEGO UNIFIED HIGH SCHOOL GRADS
Outstanding Students in Class of 2015 Honored at Annual Event
WHAT: 2015 "Salute to Excellence"
WHEN: 4-6 p.m., Wednesday, May 27, 2015. Reception from 4:30-4:30 p.m.; ceremony begins at 4:30 p.m.
WHERE: Shiley Theater, University of San Diego, 5998 Alcala Park (92110)
ADMISSION: The event is free and open to the public.
BACKGROUND: Recognition event for seniors ranked in the top one percent of their high school's Class of 2015. More than 100 students will be honored including all high school valedictorians. Principals, counselors, parents and other family members will be in attendance along with Board of Education members and Supt. Cindy Marten. Ed Hildago, senior director of staffing at Qualcomm. is the guest speaker. Clairemont High School valedictorian Vinh Nguyen is the student speaker. Kearny High School student Travis Gooden will serve as master of ceremonies. Musical entertainment is being provided by the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA) jazz band and singers.
This annual event brings students together from all San Diego Unified high schools, where they receive a certificate and a medal marking their achievement. Some of these students are the first in their families to go to college. The schools that students will be attending include UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC San Diego, University of San Diego, SDSU, Harvard, Stanford, Dartmouth and Yale.
PHOTOS/INTERVIEWS: Students and family members will be on hand to speak on their challenges in achieving academic excellence. Each principal will introduce his/her students, then move from the stage to the outdoor patio for photos; interviews can also be conducted there.
