MEDIA ADVISORY: San Diego Unified Honors Classified Employees of the Year

WHAT: California recognizes the important contributions of classified school employees by naming the third full week of May "Classified School Employee Week" to honor these contributions. Classified school employees play crucial roles in education. From transporting and feeding students to teaching them vital skills and ensuring that schools are operating smoothly, classified employees are integral to public education.The San Diego Unified Classified Employee event honors the district's 2015 Classified Employee of the Year. The runner-up and more than 80 classified employees from individual schools and departments will also be recognized.

ATTENDEES INCLUDE: Superintendent Cindy Marten, Board of Education members, district leadership, school administrators, families and friends of classified employees being recognized, and student performers from Monroe Clark Middle School and Patrick Henry High School.
VISUALS: The district Classified Employee of the Year being honored with a video tribute, runner-up receiving special recognition and site classified employees of the year being recognized. Attendance is usually 200 people. Students are performing during the ceremony. Culinary students from Madison, Morse and Scripps Ranch high schools are prepping and serving food during the reception. Clark Middle School band is providing the music.
DETAILS: This year's Classified Employee of Year is Rodel Agpao, a special education paraprofessional at Pacific Beach Middle School. On any given day, you can find Rodel out in the community assisting his students on a life skills field-trip, teaching students how to fish, helping individual students with assignments or providing back-up in the health office. He regularly facilitates activities and clubs that help develop friendships between general education students and students with disabilities. After school and on weekends, he enrolls in professional development courses and also makes time to volunteer for programs outside of the school system. He was just chosen to lead a Sea Cadet trip for teens in Vancouver, Canada.
In addition to the ceremony, there is a reception before the special Board of Education meeting, starting at 4:15 p.m. Students from San Diego Unified's award-winning culinary arts programs at Madison, Morse and Scripps Ranch high schools will be prepping and serving appetizers and desserts. The band from Clark Middle School is providing the music.
