San Diego Unified Dedicates New Multipurpose Field and Track Customized for Special Needs Students

WHAT: Board Trustee John Lee Evans and other district leaders will join students, parents, staff and community members in celebrating the completion of a new multipurpose, synthetic field at San Diego Unified School District's Whittier K-12 School that serves students with special needs in San Diego.

WHEN: May 26, Tuesday, 10-11 a.m.

WHERE: Whittier K-12 School, 3401 Clairemont Dr., San Diego, CA 92117 -- The new field is located on the northeast side of the campus. (A site map is available upon request.) Media parking will be available on site. To access it, enter the gate on Clairemont Drive and proceed east, following the signage.

VISUALS: Student-led Pledge of Allegiance, students dancing, student speakers, ceremonial ribbon cutting, student activities on the soccer and baseball fields, as well as the track, immediately following the dedication ceremony (at approximately 10:30 a.m.). Students participating in the dedication program have media releases.

GUEST SPEAKERS: Students, Principal Janice Von Arx, Board Trustee John Lee Evans, and Chief Facilities Planning and Construction Officer Lee Dulgeroff.

INTERVIEWS: The speakers will be available for interviews. (Spanish interviews available.)

PROJECT INFO: This project included the installation of a rubberized mini-baseball field with dugouts and backstop, synthetic turf multipurpose field, perimeter running track and fencing at Whittier K-12 School to serve all students, including those with special needs. It's anticipated that a shared-use agreement will be established so that The Miracle League of San Diego can use the facilities when school is not in session. The nearly $950,000 project began construction during fall 2014 and was completed spring 2015. It was funded by San Diego Unified School District's Proposition Z, the district's capital improvement bond measure passed in 2012. Byrom-Davey, Inc. designed and constructed the facilities
