Community and Family Members Celebrate Olympian Florence Griffith Joyner's Legacy

What: "Celebrate Family Day" and Official Grand Opening of Florence Griffith Joyner
Elementary School and Joint-Use Field

When: Tomorrow (Saturday, June 12), 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. (ceremony 10:30-11 a.m.)

Where: Florence Griffith Joyner Elementary School, 4271 Myrtle Avenue, SD 92105
(enter through Thorn Street)

The family of the late Florence Griffith Joyner, Olympic athlete, and community members will join San Diego Unified School District and the City of San Diego tomorrow in celebrating the official grand opening of the school that bears Joyner's name and the new joint-use field.

10:30-11 a.m. -- Guest Speakers Mayor Jerry Sanders, City Councilman Todd Gloria and Board of Education President Richard Barrera, dedication/ribbon-cutting ceremony

11-11:15 a.m. -- Performances by the San Diego Civic Dance Arts Department

11:15 a.m. - 2 p.m. -- Food, air jump games, arts and crafts, face painting, games/prizes, information booths, a fire truck, historical police vehicles, classic mustangs and dog contest (1 p.m.)

Joint-use field: This is an eagerly anticipated project coordinated between the community, the City of San Diego and the San Diego Unified School District. This project involved the construction of approximately 1.7 acres of irrigated turf multipurpose field, additional parking and accessible pathways into the field. Construction finished September 2009.

School facility: Florence Griffith Joyner Elementary School opened September 4, 2007. The school has 32 classrooms, 55,666 square feet of facilities, 6.3 acres, 79 parking spaces, 105 trees and 1,983 shrubs, vines and groundcovers, joint-use field for soccer and baseball, multipurpose room, library/media center, lunch shelter, elevator and accessibility features, kitchen, faculty lounge, administrative center, and energy-efficient design features. The buildings' steel columns and rooflines express the spirit of Florence Griffith Joyner, the athlete, in their dynamic swiftness and strength.
