NEWS RELEASE from the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts, June 7, 2010

SD REP, SD SCHOOL OF CREATIVE AND PERFORMING ARTS PARTNER ON HAIRSPRAY WEST COAST PREMIER

Hairspray Preview and Fundraising Party set for July 17, 2010 to benefit SCPA Art Programs

SAN DIEGO -- A select group of local high school students will be joining professional actors on stage for the hit musical, "Hairspray." Directed by San Diego Reperatory Artistic Director Sam Woodhouse, with assistance from SCPA's Artistic Director Richard Trujillo, this summer's production marks the first collaboration of its kind between the San Diego Repertory Theatre, and the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA).

"'Hairspray' is the perfect show for this ground-breaking partnership between a professional theatre and a performing arts high school: the story of the musical calls for high school and college age performers, dancing and singing their young hearts out as they fight for inclusion on a well known television dance show," says San Diego REP Artistic Director Sam Woodhouse. "I am thrilled to be able to put on our stage a mix of accomplished professional actors and the high energy young singers and dancers of our city."

Recent SCPA graduate Bethany Slomka plays Tracy Turnblad and will be joined by current and former SCPA students including Catie Marron, Erica Malachowski, Dylan Hoffinger and Matt Dray. Almost 50 SCPA students are in the cast, crew and orchestra.

SCPA will celebrate with a fundraising gala and special preview performance at 6 p.m. Saturday, July 17, in the Lyceum Theater at Horton Plaza. The gala reception will include complimentary appetizers and desserts, as well as a silent auction and entertainment. Special preview performance of Hairspray follows at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $45 which includes entry to the Gala reception and reserved seating for the performance. For this performance only, all ticket sales and proceeds from the event will benefit art and education programs at SCPA.
