NEWS RELEASE -- San Diego Unified Responds to San Diego County Grand Jury Report

NEWS RELEASE from the San Diego Unified School District, June 2, 2010

SAN DIEGO UNIFIED RESPONDS TO SAN DIEGO COUNTY GRAND JURY REPORT

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Unified School District appreciates the hard work of the San Diego County Grand Jury and will carefully review the contents and recommendations of the report released today related to District procedures and practices on the use of District funds. District leadership will carefully review the report and will develop the appropriate response to all recommendations.

Prior to the release of the report, the district had already taken numerous actions related to the Grand Jury's findings. The district Fraud Hotline, established in 2006, continues to provide an invaluable service for the district in combating waste, abuse and corruption. Investigations stemming from the Hotline have resulted in corrective action, including the discipline and termination of district employees as well as saving the district millions of dollars. The district continues its commitment to maintaining the Hotline as a means for employees to report suspected misconduct and abuse.

Similarly, the Board of Education has been very proactive by having staff issue guidelines about the proper use of student fees, charges, deposits, donations and fundraising related to courses and activities were developed and distributed to all school sites in December 2009. An informational website (http://www.sandi.net/2182201151777237/site/default.asp.) was created to provide essential resources for district staff, parents, and guardians, with the twin goals of school-community cooperation to support programs and legal compliance while providing that support.

The Grand Jury process allows the District adequate time to complete a full review of the report by giving the district until August 31, 2010 to submit a detailed response. District staff will begin this review immediately and submit a complete response to all findings and recommendation in the report by that deadline.
