SCHOOLS TO WELCOME NEW SAN DIEGO MAYOR BOB FILNER
WHAT: Visit by Mayor Filner to three San Diego schools, followed by a community rally at a fourth school.

DETAILS: As a welcome to new San Diego Mayor -- and former San Diego Unified School District Board of Education Member -- Bob Filner, four San Diego Unified schools will open their doors to His Honor on Monday, his first day of office. Accompanied by Board of Education Member Richard Barrera and Superintendent Bill Kowba, Mayor Filner will tour of three San Diego Unified schools, followed by an early-evening public meeting at a fourth school.
Mayor Filner began his political career as a member of the San Diego Unified School District Board of Education. He was a Board member from 1979-83. The tour will follow Mayor Filner's 10 a.m. swearing-in at the Balboa Park Club, located in the South Palisades area of Balboa Park.

Schedule
-- 12:30 p.m., Memorial Preparatory for Scholars and Athletes Middle School, 2850 Logan Ave. (92113). Mayor Filner will be interviewed by the Memorial TV News Team, followed by classroom visits and a short meeting with staff.
-- Travel time to Patrick Henry High School, 6702 Wandermere Dr. (92120), approximately 20 minutes.
-- 1:30 p.m. Patrick Henry High, 6702 Wandermere Dr. (92120). Mayor Filner will be greeted by JROTC members, the cheer squad and drum line. He'll be escorted to the library where he will have the opportunity to meet and speak with approximately 90 students (juniors and seniors) who worked as poll workers on election day.
-- Travel time to Central Elementary School, 4063 Polk Ave. (92105), approximately 13 minutes.
-- 2:15 p.m. Central Elementary, 4063 Polk Ave. (92105). Mayor Filner will be greeted by the school's Student Council members, who are being inaugurated on Monday. He'll also visit with the PrimeTime students and the YMCA staff that operates the after-school program. The Young Audiences of San Diego program will be visiting; Central students who have learned to sing through the program will perform.
-- 5 p.m., Mira Mesa High School, 10510 Reagan Rd. (92126). This is a community event being held at the school's Media Center. He'll be greeted by the school's student government officials and the culinary arts program is servings hors d'oeuvres. Program content is being arranged by the Mayor's office.
