SENATOR BOXER JOINS MAYOR FILNER AND OTHER SAN DIEGO OFFICIALS TO DISCUSS SCHOOL SAFETY

Senator Will Tour San Diego School With Mayor, Police Chief and School District Officials

Boxer's Bipartisan Bill to Strengthen School Safety Will Be Considered by the Senate Next Month

Washington, D.C. – At 11:30 a.m. on Thursday March 28th, U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) will join San Diego Mayor Bob Filner, Police Chief William Lansdowne and San Diego Unified School District officials to visit Perkins Elementary School. Following a brief tour, she will hold a press conference to discuss school safety and her School and Campus Safety Enhancements Act.

The bipartisan bill – which will be considered by the Senate next month as part of broader gun violence legislation – would reauthorize and expand the Justice Department's Secure Our Schools grants program to help schools install classroom locks, lighting, fencing, reinforced doors and other deterrent measures. The bill would also help schools conduct security assessments and better coordinate with local law enforcement.

The San Diego Unified School District has benefited from more than $1.2 million in Secure Our Schools grants to purchase security equipment, including video cameras, to deter crime and protect students.

Senator Boxer, Mayor Filner and other officials will take a brief open-press tour of the school. After the tour, they will deliver remarks and take questions from the media.
