Superintendent Four-Year Contract Approved
Cindy Marten will take over on July 1
SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Unified School District Board of Education approved a four-year contract with Cindy Marten, currently principal of Central Elementary School, as the next Superintendent at tonight's Board of Education meeting.
Her appointment will take effect July 1, 2013, following the retirement of Bill Kowba on June 30, 2013.
The Board is granting Marten a four-year contract, the longest period of time allowed, with a starting salary of $255,000. Marten has pledged to use $5,000 of her salary for a scholarship that will be awarded to a student who is planning a career in education. This donation will make her first-year salary $250,000, equal to Kowba's current salary.
"The Board unanimously agree that Cindy Marten is the right choice as the next superintendent for San Diego Unified," said Board President John Lee Evans. "We wanted an educator who is a visionary leader and a leader who can assertively guide the district to the goals of Vision 2020. Cindy Marten is that person."
Marten will spend March wrapping up her commitments at Central Elementary School. She is scheduled to move to the Education Center April 1 to work side-by-side with Kowba until he retires June 30. At the Education Center, Marten will immerse herself in programs, processes and routines that she will oversee as the Superintendent.
