THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS TO WALK AND BIKE TO SCHOOL IN HONOR OF INTERNATIONAL WALK TO SCHOOL DAY

WHAT: In honor of International Walk to School Day on Oct. 8, thousands of students from 53 schools countywide will walk or bike to school tomorrow. Many of these schools also are enrolled in the region wide Walk, Ride, and Roll to School Challenge, a week-long competition offering campuses a chance to win up to $1,000 in classroom supplies. One of the schools participating in the challenge is Holmes Elementary in the Clairemont neighborhood of San Diego. Holmes students will meet up around 8:15 a.m. at Clairemont Covenant Church and depart around 8:40 a.m. to walk or bike about half a mile together to their campus. They will receive free refreshments, blinking clip-on safety lights, drawstring backpacks, and trading cards that illustrate bike and pedestrian safety with fun cartoon characters. Organized by the SANDAG iCommute program, the annual challenge motivates students to use healthier, more environmentally sustainable ways to get to and from school, such as biking, walking, carpooling, and taking transit.
