Please note that if items are listed as "not open to the public," that means accredited members of the media are invited, but the general public is not. These are generally items during the school day.

OCTOBER

 

*8 -- Walk and Bike to School Day, 7-8:30 a.m. Schools across the district, including elementary and middle schools in Pt. Loma and Holmes Elementary in Clairemont, will be participating in this annual event. Students and parents are encouraged to walk or ride a bike to school to promote safe school routes and the importance of physical activity. 8 – UCSD Alumni and San Diego Unified Evening for Educators, 4:30-6:30 p.m., Morse High School, 6905 Skyline Dr. (92114). UCSD alumni and K-12 educators will come together for an event that will feature Supt. Cindy Marten who will reflect on her experience at UCSD and address the district’s Vision 2020. 8 -- Community Development Meeting, 5:30-7 p.m., Barnard Elementary, 2445 Fogg Street (92109). A community meeting to discuss the redevelopment of five district-owned properties for new uses. Open to the public. Contact: Midori Wong, director, special projects, at (619) 725-8191.

 

*11 -- Free Parent Advocacy Workshop, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Ballard Parent Center, 2375 Congress Ave (92110). This event is for families, and will provide support and training to parents about how to be the best advocate for their child, discussing the important issues affecting their child's education, and what families can do about it. *15 – College Prep Day, 7:30 a.m. to 12:25 p.m., Hoover High School, 4474 El Cajon Blvd. (92115). In an effort to promote a college-going culture, a campus-wide event is being held to expose students to college activities including seminars on community college orientation, writing a personal statement and choosing a major. *16 -- Great California Shake Out, 10:16 a.m., all district schools and administrative offices will participate in the district wide earthquake drill. The district is joining schools districts from throughout California to better prepare students, staff, parents and visitors in responding to an earthquake. 22 -- Community Development Meeting, 5:30-7 p.m., Facilities Planning and Construction, 4860 Ruffner Street (92111). A community meeting to discuss the redevelopment of the Transportation Site for new uses. Open to the public. Contact: Midori Wong, director, special projects, at (619) 725-8191.

 

*26 -- Trick or Trot 5K and 3K Fun Run, 8 a.m., Morley Field, 2221 Morley Field Drive, Balboa Park (92104). Proceeds from the event will support Roosevelt Middle School and its after-school programs. Cost is $35 for adults and $15 for kids 15 years and younger. Participants are encouraged to wear Halloween costumes and prizes will be awarded for best costume in addition to race categories.
