PROJECT INFO:
This project included the installation of an all-weather, four-lane running track and three fitness stations around the school's current turf field. The more than $401,000 project was funded by the school district's Proposition Z, the general obligation bond measure approved by voters in 2012; and by a $25,000 donation from San Diego Half Marathon. Construction began in late June, and was completed at the end of September.
BACKGROUND:
Myron B. Green Elementary is an academic and athletic magnet school in the San Carlos community of San Diego. It offers regular, vigorous exercise in addition to rigorous academics to create a sound mind and sound body.
This fitness circuit course is part of the comprehensive "Keep Green on Track Project" that provides a unique and varied Physical Education (PE) program without the need to increase staffing or secure ongoing financial resources. This fitness course will expose Green ES students to physically and mentally challenging activities that can be done outdoors using equipment typically found in the community and on playgrounds. It also provides opportunities for students who may not be interested in traditional activities normally offered in PE classes, and for disabled students who may not otherwise be able to fully participate in track and field, running, and fitness portions of the PE program due to lack of accessibility.
