OCTOBER

 

22 -- Community Development Meeting, 5:30-7 p.m., Facilities Planning and Construction, 4860 Ruffner Street (92111). A community meeting to discuss the redevelopment of the Transportation Site for new uses. Open to the public. Contact: Midori Wong, director, special projects, at (619) 725-8191.

 

*22 -- 6th Annual Arts Colleges Salon, 6-8 p.m., San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA), 2425 Dusk Drive (92139). SCPA is hosting The New School, San Francisco Art Institute, the Fashion Industry of Design and Merchandising, and USC in an intimate and informative discussion about the differences and similarities of arts focused post-secondary life. *23 -- California Thursdays Launch event, 12-1 p.m., Pacific Beach Elementary School, 1234 Tourmaline Street (92109). California Thursdays is a statewide pilot program that focuses on serving California food to California students. 27 schools in San Diego Unified will be participating. Thursday’s menu at PB Elementary consists of Mary’s free-range chicken drumsticks, salad bar with California produce and milk from Hollandia Dairy. Not open to the public. 26 -- Trick or Trot 5K and 3K Fun Run, 8 a.m., Morley Field, 2221 Morley Field Drive, Balboa Park (92104). Proceeds from the event will support Roosevelt Middle School and its after-school programs. Cost is $35 for adults and $15 for kids 15 years and younger. Participants are encouraged to wear Halloween costumes and prizes will be awarded for best costume in addition to race categories. *29 -- College Fair 2014, 6-8:30 p.m., Scottish Rite Center, 1895 Camino del Rio South (92108). Annual event for high school students and parents with representatives from more than 100 colleges and seven workshops related to college preparation. Free. Open to the public. NOVEMBER

 

*1-- Dare to Dream College: The African-American Experience, 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., UC San Diego, 9500 Gilman Drive, La Jolla (92093). Free event for 4th-12th students, parents and community leaders that includes workshops on financial aid, SAT/ACT tests, UC application process and parent role in education. *1 -- Curie Elementary 36th Annual Holiday Craft Fair, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Curie Elementary School, 4080 Governor Drive (92122). This annual event is a fundraiser for the school’s PTA  and includes 100 + vendors selling a variety of homemade items, baked goods area, and a food booth. 11 – Veterans Day Holiday. All schools and work sites closed.

*19 -- 17th Annual Garfield High School Thanksgiving Gourmet Luncheon, 12 noon, The Prado restaurant, Balboa Park. Culinary Arts and Hospitality students from Garfield High School along with chefs from the The Prado restaurant will prepare a gourmet Thanksgiving lunch buffet. DECEMBER

 

*1 – 2014 State of the District Address, 4:30 p.m. reception, 5:15 p.m. program, Lewis Middle School, 5170 Greenbrier Ave. (92120). This annual event presented by the Board of Education and the Superintendent provides an update on the district’s progress and plans for the future. Free. Open to the public.
