BACKGROUND: On November 4, 2008, nearly 69 percent of the voters in San Diego passed the $2.1 billion general obligation bond measure, Proposition S, so that San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) could repair, renovate and revitalize more than 200 schools. The state-of-the art Culinary Arts and Events Center is one of 15 College, Career & Technical Education facilities being constructed under the Proposition S (local) and Proposition 1D (state) bond programs. It represents an investment of nearly $2 million into Garfield High School and the downtown community.

The culinary arts project transformed a 3,200-square-foot basement and nearby concrete amphitheatre/courtyard into a state-of-the-art, culinary arts kitchen and event center. In addition, the school's Science Department will maintain an on-site organic garden where students will learn how to grow and cook with produce from the garden. This College, Career & Technical Education project creates professional working environments for students while still in school. Besides the terraced, organic garden on the site's north side, key features of this facility include:

* Commercial-quality kitchen and serving line
* A lecture area
* Two dining and conference rooms with a view of the kitchen via glass walls
* Storefront windows and glass doors to connect the dining area with the courtyard
* A steel-shade shelter with a translucent canopy to shade the amphitheatre's courtyard

The project partners included Galvin Cristilli Parshalle Architects and M.A. Stevens Construction.
