SUPERINTENDENT HELPS GET HOOVER HIGH¹S 80TH YEAR STARTED
WHAT: First day of school activities for San Diego Unified¹s 157th year, as
well as superintendent availability.
WHEN: 6-9 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7

-- 6-7 a.m. First day of school availability by Supt. Bill Kowba, who is
scheduled to be on the football field at along with new football coach and
SDUSD great Cree Morris, the Cardinal varsity football team, cheer squad and
Hoover alums. He¹ll be available for live and taped interviews to talk about
the new school year. In addition, this year marks Hoover¹s 80th year and
alumni are planning celebrations. For 6 a.m. live shots, enter from the gate
near the corner of Chamoune Avenue and El Cajon Blvd. (the east side of
campus).
-- 7-8 a.m., Hoover teachers, staff and students, as well as district staff,
will be in Hoover¹s brand new Robert Breitbard Building, which is open to
students for the first time. One of the building's new high-tech classrooms
will be available for you, with teachers, students and staff on hand for
interviews. Live truck parking available off Highland Avenue on west side of
campus.
-- 8-9 a.m. Hoover's on-campus health clinic. Tour the school's unique
clinic, the first and still one of only three in San Diego Unified. More
than just the school nurse's office, the clinic includes a variety of
services, including dentistry. Hoover is in a working class neighborhood,
where the school health clinic may be the only medical services available to
students. The clinic's director, Ellen Hohenstein, will also be available to
talk about prevention of whooping cough. Live truck parking available off
Highland Avenue on west side of campus.

-- This is Supt. Kowba's first first day of school as Superintendent.
-- Attendance is a big focus this year. Beginning Thursday, school staff and
community volunteers will be helping absent students start their new school
year and with other assistance to help them have a successful school year.
It's all part of Project Recovery and Re-Engagement.
-- Approximately l17,262 students are projected to be enrolled in
district-run schools this year, down 486 from 2009-10. Charter schools are
projected to educate another 14,931 students.
-- San Diego Unified's new Community Based School Reform Model will be
tested in action for the first time. Nine area superintendents, each with
two high schools and their feeder schools, will be working with principals
and school staff members to ensure a smooth opening.
