NEWS RELEASE -- Special Services Offered to Eligible Students

NEWS RELEASE from the San Diego Unified School District, Sept. 2, 2010

SPECIAL SERVICES OFFERED TO ELIGIBLE STUDENTS
Programs for Individuals with Exceptional Needs

SAN DIEGO ­ As required by law, San Diego Unified School District is
committed to identifying, locating and assessing all students within the
district from birth to 21 years of age who may have disabilities. This
includes students enrolled in public, private and parochial schools and
highly mobile individual such as migrant and homeless children.

Eligible disabilities include, but are not limited to, hearing and/or vision
impairment; physical handicap; mental retardation; orthopedic impairment;
emotional disturbance; learning disability; speech and language impairment;
and traumatic brain injury.

Special education and other program options and related services are
provided to eligible students with disabilities. These services are provided
based on the individual needs of the student and the recommendation of the
Individualized Education Program (IEP) Team.

Options for eligible students include additional support and services in the
general education setting; designated instruction and services such as
language, speech and adapted physical education; special day class programs;
and alternative school settings.

Parents who feel that their child is having problems learning in school and
suspect that they have a disability, should bring their concern to the
attention of their child¹s teacher or principal, or contact the Special
Education Office at (619) 725-7700.

Programs and services for eligible pupils are pursuant to the Individuals
with Disabilities Act and California law. The delivery of special education
in the San Diego Unified School District is described the Local Plan for
Special Education. For more information parents are urged to call their
