NEWS RELEASE -- First of Nine Town Hall Meetings Set by San Diego Unified School District

FIRST OF NINE TOWN HALL MEETINGS SET TO DISCUSS STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT, BUDGET

WILL BE HELD AROUND SAN DIEGO UNIFIED THROUGH OCT. 21

SAN DIEGO -- Community forums to discuss goals for student achievement, the
budget crisis and the Proposition J Parcel Tax measure are scheduled through
Oct. 21, with the first scheduled 7 -8:30 P.M., Wednesday, Sept. 22, at the
San Diego High Educational Complex, 1405 Park Boulevard.

The town hall meetings will give parents, guardians and community residents
an opportunity to meet senior district staff and their local Area
Superintendent. One meeting will be held in each of the nine Area
Superintendent regions, with Area 3 Superintendent Hector Montenegro, Ed.D.,
hosting Wednesday's meeting.

"We invite all residents in the San Diego Unified School District to attend
these meetings," said Bill Kowba, Superintendent. "Whether or not you have
students in our schools, all taxpayers deserve an opportunity to hear what's
going on in our district."

Although there will be time for attendees to ask questions on any topic,
district staff will be making brief presentations on: the Community-Based
School Reform Model; the recently released state test scores; and the fifth
year of severe budget cuts, with $141 million projected reduction in state
funding for 2011-12.

The meetings are free and open to the public. For more information, call San

-- 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29, Scripps Ranch High School, 10410 Treena
St. (92131). Area 5, schools in the Scripps Ranch and Mira Mesa high schools
area, hosted by Angela Bass, Area Superintendent.

-- 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, Crawford High Educational Complex, 4191
Colts Way (92115). Area 2, which includes schools in the Crawford area and
charter schools, Rupi Boyd, Ed.D., Area Superintendent.

-- 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, Pt. Loma High School, 2335 Chatsworth Blvd.
(92106). Area 7, Mission Bay and Pt. Loma High schools, Dianna Carberry,
Ed.D., Area Superintendent.

-- 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, University City High School, 6949 Genesee
Ave. (92122). Area 6, University City and La Jolla High school areas, Mike
Price, Area Superintendent.

-- 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11, Cherokee Point Elementary School, 3735 38th
St. (92105). Area 9, Hoover and Kearny High school areas, Tony Burks, Ed.D.,
Area Superintendent.

-- 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, Porter North Elementary School, 445 S. 47th
St. (92113). Area 1, Lincoln and Morse High schools area, Brenda Campbell,
Ed.D., Area Superintendent.

-- 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 20, Serra High School, 5156 Santo Rd. (92124).
Area 8, Patrick Henry and Serra high schools area, David Lorden, Area
Superintendent.

-- 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, Clairemont High School, 4150 Ute. Dr.
