FEBRUARY

2 -- Crawford Cluster meeting, 6 p.m., Mann Middle School Library, 4345 54th Street (92115). Dinner, childcare, and translation services are provided.

 

4 -- An Evening with Joy Cowley, 4-6 p.m., Standley Middle School auditorium, 6298 Radcliffe Drive (92122). Renowned children’s book author, Joy Cowley, will give a special presentation to district TK – 2 grade teachers. Her presentation will be followed by a meet and greet. Not open to the public. 5 -- 11th Annual Teen Iron Chef Competition, 3:30-6 p.m., SDG&E Energy Innovation Center, 7460 Clairemont Mesa Blvd. (92117). Students from Hoover, Madison, Morse, San Diego and Scripps Ranch high schools will battle each other preparing a three-course meal incorporating a secret ingredient that will be revealed just prior to the start of the competition. *7 -- Cash for College: FAFSA & Dream Act Workshop, 9 a.m. to noon, Serra High School, 5156 Santo Road (92124). Workshop provides the opportunity for high school students to get free assistance with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the Dream Act application. *7 – Lincoln High School College Fair, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Lincoln High School, 4777 Imperial Avenue (92113). This free event is aimed at helping students and families develop an after high school plan. Representatives from local community colleges and four-year universities will be present as well as national universities including Tuskegee and Morehouse. 9 -- San Diego Unified Council of PTAs Reflections Reception, 6:30-8 p.m., Standley Middle School library, 6298 Radcliffe Drive (92122).  The Reflections programs give students an opportunity to express themselves creatively and receive positive recognition for original works of art inspired by a pre-selected annual theme. *11 -- Design Task Force Meeting, 6 p.m., Point Loma High School library, 2335 Chatsworth Boulevard (92106). Public meeting to discuss the Whole Site Modernization Project at Pt. Loma School. The architect will discuss the general design of the school and how it can best serve the students and the community for years to come. 12 -- Renaming Florence Elementary Public Meeting, 5:30-6:30 p.m., Florence Elementary School, 3914 First Avenue (92103). San Diego Unified has received a request from the Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender (GLBT) Historical Society to rename Florence Elementary to Christine Kehoe Elementary School. This is the second community meeting to inform the public of the request and gather community input on this request as the district implements its process in the naming of schools. 13,16 -- All schools and offices closed in observance Lincoln’s and Washington’s birthdays.

 

*18 – 2nd Annual Wheelchair Challenge, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Pt. Loma High School, 2335 Chatsworth Boulevard (92106). Students will take the challenge to use a wheelchair for the entire school day. There will be a special lunch time assembly and at the end of the day, participants will convene to discuss their experiences and insights. Not open to the public. *19 – An Evening with UC San Diego, 6-8 p.m., Lincoln High School Theater, 4777 Imperial Avenue (92113). This free event provides 10th grade students and their parents/guardians the opportunity to learn more about UCSD including admission criteria, financial aid and career services. UCSD Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, Juan Gonzalez, and San Diego Unified Superintendent, Cindy Marten, will be featured speakres. 26 -- Black History Month Youth Speech Contest, 5:30-7:30 p.m., Crawford High School auditorium, 4191 Colts Way (92115). Student in grades 2-8 at any school in the San Diego Unified, Lemon Grove, or La Mesa/Spring Valley school districts or San Diego County charter school will present a three-minute speech.
