Student performances will take place from 5-9 a.m.; a special ceremony will take place from 9:30-11 a.m. Activities include the traditional lion dance, martial arts presentations, classical Chinese musical performances and student performances. 26 -- Black History Month Youth Speech Contest, 5:30-7:30 p.m., Crawford High School auditorium, 4191 Colts Way (92115). Student in grades 2-8 at any school in the San Diego Unified, Lemon Grove, or La Mesa/Spring Valley school districts or San Diego County charter school will present a three-minute speech. Awards will be presented to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. Sponsored by the Association of African American Educators. Contact: info@aaaesandiego.org .

 

*26 -- Project Ujima, An African American Perspective on Discovering Your Roots, 5:30-7:30 p.m., Valencia Park Elementary School auditorium, 5880 Skyline Drive (92114). Margaret Lewis, President of the San Diego African American Genealogy Research Group, is the guest speaker. *27 -- 2016 Tournament of Roses Parade Presentation, 10:30-11:30 a.m., Mira Mesa High School gymnasium, 10510 Reagan Rd. (92126). The Mira Mesa High School “Sapphire Sound” marching band and color guard will be receiving their formal invitation to participate in the 2016 Tournament of Roses parade. Tournament of Roses President Mike Matthiessen will make the presentation. Students, parents, teachers, administrators, community members and elected officials will be in attendance. *27 -- Family Science Night, 5-7:30 p.m., Wangenheim Middle School, 9230 Gold Coast Dr. (92126). Hundreds of parents and students will participate in hands on activities and labs at the middle school’s first Family Science Night. Several community partners including UCSD Sparks and San Diego Astronomers Association will be in attendance to expand the range of activities beyond those run by teachers. *28 -- 32nd Annual Involved Exceptional Parents' Day Conference, 7:30 a.m. to 4:35 p.m., Handlery Hotel, 950 Hotel Circle North (92108). Annual conference for parents of children with special needs and the professionals who work with them. There will be exhibits and workshops throughout the day. 28 -- Cash for College: FAFSA & Dream Act Workshop, 9 a.m. to noon, Mission Bay High School, 2475 Grand Avenue (92109). Workshop provides the opportunity for high school students to get free assistance with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the Dream Act application. 28 -- Barnard Lunar New Year Celebration, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Barnard Asian Pacific Language Academy, 2445 Fogg Street (92109).  Students, families, and staff will celebrate the Year of the Sheep. *7 -- 7th Annual Future Educators Association College Conference, 9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., Point Loma Nazarene College Liberty Station Conference Center, 2600 Lanning Road (92106). High school and middle school students are invited to learn more about college programs and scholarships. Activities include workshops on scholarships and completing applications, panel discussions with college representatives and K-12 teachers, and a college fair with representatives from local community colleges and universities both locally and across the country.
