WHAT: “The Wheelchair Challenge” educates students on the difficulties faced by people with physical disabilities. Point Loma High students will experience what it is like to use a wheelchair for an entire day and will have the opportunity to navigate an obstacle course with their wheelchairs during lunch.
WHEN: Wednesday, February 18, 2015, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

GUEST SPEAKERS/INTERVIEWS:
- Devin Eschelman, former athlete from Scripps Ranch High School, now confined to a wheelchair.
- Valerie Crisci, Point Loma High student and wheelchair user, who had the idea for “The Wheelchair Challenge.”
SCHEDULE:
- 7:00 a.m. – Students meet in Room 901/Film Studio to discuss use of wheelchairs and handout elevator keys to students
- 7:25 a.m. – Students go to their first period and continue about their regular day
- 11:20 a.m. – 12:21 p.m. – Stations in Quad/Harmony Home Medical Booth Display
- 11:50 a.m. – 12:21 p.m. – Lunch provided by The Venetian restaurant in Room 301 for all participants
- 12:27 p.m. – 1:18 p.m. – Town Hall/Panel Discussion in Performing Arts Center (some sixth-period classes are invited)
- 2:30 p.m. – Everyone back in Room 901/Film Studio to return wheelchairs and discuss their experience.

BACKGROUND: The Wheelchair Challenge is the brainchild of student Valerie Crisci, a junior and wheelchair user. The chairs and obstacle course have been donated for the day’s use by the event sponsor Harmony Home Medical and Remodeling (HarmonyHomeMedical.com). Harmony is based in Kearny Mesa and specializes in personal mobility equipment and home-access remodeling. Last year, 12 students participated in the Wheelchair Challenge.
