Ribbon Cutting for Restored Vintage Trolley Honoring Balboa Park Centennial Celebration
What: The Metropolitan Transit System (MTS), San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E), the San Diego Unified School District and 60 third-graders from Washington Elementary will cut the ribbon and take the inaugural ride on Balboa Park Centennial Car #530 – the latest restored vintage trolley operating on the Silver Line downtown loop.
Thanks to grants from SDG&E, nearly a year of restoration work by MTS employees and Balboa Park’s Centennial Celebration, Centennial Car #530 is now ready for service. Attendees will enjoy a celebration at the 12th & Imperial Transit Center and then take the inaugural ride through downtown San Diego.
Additionally Centennial Car #530 will be part of a year-long third grade student education program about San Diego’s past and present. Throughout the year, third grade students will be invited to take historic trips on the Silver Line aboard the historic vintage Trolley cars. Both cars will be a history lesson on rails as the interiors will be lined with historic photos of SDG&E, Balboa Park, San Diego Unified School District and MTS.
